Becky Tarver Chase is an experienced English instructor who has taught all subject areas including reading, writing, grammar, communication skills, and test preparation. She has worked at universities and in private programs in the United States, Mexico, and Thailand. Her current focus is on creating effective language-learning materials, and she is one of the authors of the World English, Reading Explorer, Close-Up, and Pathways series from National Geographic Learning.

Kristin Johannsen held an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She had extensive experience teaching English in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, France, and the United States. She has presented her ideas on global issues at multiple conferences around the world and was a published author. Don't buy a used book because we can't use.

I don't recommend nobody to buy a "used book" because each book has a code that we have to use to study on line. I bought a used book and I didn't know about this code, so I got this book but I can't use. Now, I have to buy another one.

great English textbook!

Great textbook, beautiful photography, full of rich cultural information. This textbook is fascinating even for a native English speaker to read. Each unit introduces the reader to tons of multicultural information, while at the same time leading students to discuss complex issues. The first one is about different gender roles around the world; energy efficiency and the preservation of species are brought out later. This textbook was just being released last fall, and lower levels were said to be scheduled for release in the spring of 2012.

Very informative and interesting

I faithfully listened to "The Invention of Childhood" which was (and is currently being) broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This is such an interesting topic and the the narrator, Michael Morpurgo, really captivates the listener. I actually came to the Amazon website to see if there was a compilation in book or audio format where I could have it all in one shot.
So many people in our world today think that life as we know it now was always like this. This history of childhood tells us that many things we take for granted today (child support, orphanages, elimination of child labour, education for girls) are things that were nonexistent a century before.
If you are at all interested in history, you must listen to this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed both the radio series and the book. The book was well-written, engaging and sufficiently intellectual without appearing too snobby or the author being too fascinated with the sound of his own 'voice'. This is history telling at its best. High recommended.

In each, he discusses a recording's merits and shortcomings and includes a list of its performers. He seems to address the younger or potential jazz fan; otherwise, how could one explain his comparisons of mid-20th century jazz performances to those of Nirvana and Sonic Youth? Straight and to the point, Ratliff acts as an advocate for what he sees as a popular art form in need of an infusion of interest. This informative book is heavy on obvious albums by Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, and Charlie Parker, but the inclusion of Jeanne Lee, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, "Baby Face" Willette, and present-day phenomenon Jason Moran illustrates Ratliff's catholic view of the jazz genre. Also included is a list (title, main performer, date, and record label information only) of a second 100 recordings. This might not be a book that jazz fans will buy for their personal libraries-they have probably already formed their own tastes and list of favorites-but as a guide for the uninitiated it is essential for academic music libraries and public libraries large and small. Ratliff's essential jazz-records book separates itself from the herd at once by starting its chronological listing with The Creators of Jazz by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the white outfit that ever since it recorded jazz first has been tarred for crudely ripping off black music. Ratliff defends the ODJB's music making as well as its historic importance while granting that its leader may have been the worst racist in jazz history. Later, he includes, with warm appreciation, Latin jazz players Chano Pozo, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, and Moacir Santos, who aren't even listed in some huge jazz record guides. He has smart and persuasive essays on why underrated popular jazzmen John Kirby, Ahmad Jamal, and "Baby Face" Willette deserve places in the pantheon. He even gives the nod to difficult, dissonant experimenters Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, and Evan Parker, whom many jazz historians barely tolerate. All that, and Armstrong, Ellington, Holiday, Basie, Tatum, "Bird," Monk, Mingus, Miles, and the others everybody expects to be in on this jam, too. Damn good book. Ray Olson

Decent introduction to jazz

The recommendations in this book are all solid and classic. The brief essays about the recordings are fairly erudite, but I find the tone slightly pretentious at times. I agree with another reviewer in that he tends to write about himself instead of striving for a more objective description of the recordings.

Obviously, a list of 100 recordings cannot begin to justice to the enormous quantity of jazz available. Ratliff's list concentrates more on established "classics" than on modern players -- you will not find Brad Mehldau, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, or Nick Payton. Nor will you find more "approachable" but great contemporary musicians such as Kurt Elling and Luciana Souza. Because of this, I do not recommend the guide to someone who wants to get an idea of where jazz is right now. It is more of a historical introduction than a guide for modern listeners. This is not meant as criticism; that is probably what Ratliff intended.

Overall, this book would be a decent place to start for the jazz newbie (or even for the seasoned listener, who may have neglected some or many of these recordings).

The reviews here have been too harsh to this book. This book is not meant by any strech to be a replacement for the Penguin Jazz on CD Guide, but as a list and analysis of 100 very good jazz CDs it isn't bad at all. The reviews are generally insightful and informative, and the book contains a fine balance of big band, be-bop, and post-bop, with all the colours in between. (His defense of Cecil Taylor is particularly refreshing.) I might quibble with the title, but no list of 100 CDs will satisfy every reader as including all the "essentials." The main list, combined with the additional 100 CDs listed in the appendix, would provide enough listening enjoyment for a lifetime.

A Clear, Helpful Introduction to Buying Jazz Today

Ratliff's style is accessible, direct, and relevant to younger folks hoping to discover jazz recordings of merit. One of his themes is that jazz can both be good art and entertain at the same time, which is fantastic in my view because too many folks are intimidated by "America's classical music." Buy this book and you'll reference it a hundred times when hoping to expand your knowledge of the music, I guarantee.

THE first book to start understanding who you are

While "everyperson" might not find this entertaining reading, I think this book is the first one I would/will give my children as they try to become adults. It ought to be required reading for every adult in every culture, especially those who think they're "right." Csikszentmihalyi's insight and ability to weave a powerful story from myriad perspectives is simply awesome. We may think we are "people" but until we understand the interconnection of our genetic heritage and our mimetic heritage, and develop our own sense of flow in the world, we are little more than reproductions of other (dead) people's thinking. The concepts of memes and complexity and the invitation to become a transcender ranks Csikszentmihalyi right along side Carl Rogers as the most informed about how we can become truly individual, contributing human beings. Don't miss this book!

A 2011 Favorite - Published in 1993

Don't Delay - READ THIS BOOK TODAY!

I have a personal discipline. For every 5 books I read, one of those books MUST be at least five years old. Once again, I have been immensely blessed by this discipline.

What honestly startled me about this book, published in 1993, the unfinished business that remains to be realized is both profound and poignant. It's simply that prescient.

The following are a few tidbit excerpts. As you read them, please consider their pertinence today:

"At this point in our history it should be possible for an individual to build a self that is not simply the outcome of biological drives and cultural habits, but a conscious, personal creation. That self will be aware of its freedom and not fear it." P. 4.

The point is not to be browbeaten into the belief that you are powerless. It is in the interest of those who control our energy to make it seem that the status quo is natural, right, and impossible to change. It is in our interest to figure out that this is not always true. P. 105.

Having learned that boredom and worry are the norm in the family, in the school, and in the community at large, children give up curiosity, interest, the desire to explore new possibilities, and become used to passive entertainment. P.203.

Most novel ideas or behaviors are generated by people who try out new things because they are bored by old routines, or because they are confounded by chaos. P. 255.

If you're bored by old routines and/or curious or concerned about chaos in this world, this book is for you.

One of my favorites YTD in 2011 --- even though it was published in 1993.

Important to Read this Book

"The Evolving Self" is not a typical general interest psychology book. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi puts on the philosopher hat for this book. The book takes the position that everyone needs to take responsibility for directing our future for the better. Mihaly warns that we cannot assume our civilization will always improve. He argues that the third millennium could prove to be a turning point where societal improvement will stop becoming automatic and may require we consciously direct bringing greater order to the world.

"The Evolving Self" is a heavily researched book. The book will take your mind across the span of history and cultures. In that sense, it is a joy to be exposed to all these aspects from the perspective of a psychologist (but wearing a philosopher's hat mind you).

My main criticism of "The Evolving Self" is the language used. This term meme is used through out. Meme was introduced by Richard Dawkins in 1976 and is not considered part of mainstream social science thinking. Memes are hard to wrap your head around because they treat cultural ideas almost like evolving life forms. It's a little weird and just a theory at this point, but Mihaly uses it as the foundation to how we can direct our own evolution. Other language that is a bit weird is "entropy" and "complexity". We want our actions to not increase entropy and increase complexity. This is kind of abstract and not as inspiring as it could be when we are really just talking about trying to make the world a better place.

The part of the book I was really looking forward to is the early part of the book. Mihaly teased of covering the new field of evolutionary psychology. Evolutionary psychology attempts to explain our current day psychological traits as the output of evolutionary natural selection over thousands of years. This stuff I dig, but the coverage on evolutionary psychology is quite limited.

I still highly recommend "The Evolving Self". When I finished the book, I paused to think about how I could do my part to "increase complexity". I was glad for all the things Mihaly exposed me to in his book and for making me feel the importance of making a difference.

"The Evolving Self" was published in 1993. I would love to hear what Mihaly thinks of the direction we have gone from 1993 to 2009. This book was written before ubiquitous video game playing, excessive multitasking, email overload, anxiety from 9/11, and collapse of the financial system from completely legal parasitic behavior. Does Mihaly think in the last 16 years we have allowed better opportunity for flow? Are we going in the direction he would desire? Or is society making distraction and unchecked parasitic behavior an easier choice and meaningful flow a harder choice? Flow is central to his arguments. Flow is necessary for this self evolution. I think reading "The Evolving Self" is even more important than it was in 1993. On the whole, I recommend this book.
