Turbo Twenty-Three: A Stephanie Plum Novel, by Janet Evanovich

In the heart of Trenton, N.J., a killer is out to make sure someone gets his just desserts.

Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body—frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.

As fate would have it, Stephanie’s mentor and occasional employer, Ranger, needs her to go undercover at the Bogart factory to find out who’s putting their employees on ice and sabotaging the business. It’s going to be hard for Stephanie to keep her hands off all that ice cream, and even harder for her to keep her hands off Ranger. It’s also going to be hard to explain to Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, why she is spending late nights with Ranger, late nights with Lula and Randy Briggs—who are naked and afraid—and late nights keeping tabs on Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie Plum has a lot on her plate, but for a girl who claims to have “virtually no marketable skills,” these are the kinds of sweet assignments she does best.

Larry Virgil is a lanky, grease--stained guy in his forties. He lives alone in the back room of his auto body shop on Baker Street in north Trenton, and he hasn’t cut his hair in at least ten years. For all I know that was also the last time he washed it. He has a reputation for drinking too much and abusing women, and he has a hotdog with testicles tattooed on his forehead. I suppose it might be a penis, but it’s not a very good tattoo, and I prefer to think it’s a hotdog.
None of this would be any of my business, but a couple months ago Trenton’s finest caught Virgil hijacking an eighteen--wheeler filled with cases of premium bourbon. Virgil was arrested and subsequently bonded out by my bail bondsman cousin and employer, Vincent Plum. Virgil failed to appear for his court appearance a week ago, and Vinnie isn’t happy. If Virgil isn’t brought back into the system in a timely fashion, Vinnie will lose his bond money.
My name is Stephanie Plum. I’m a college graduate with virtually no marketable skills, so for the past several years I’ve been tracking down Vinnie’s skips. What I lack in expertise I make up for with desperation and tenacity, because I only get paid when I catch someone.
It was ten o’clock at night in mid--September, and cool enough for me to need a sweatshirt over my T--shirt. I was currently pulling surveillance on Larry Virgil’s three--bay garage, hoping to catch him entering or exiting. I was with my wheelman, Lula. We’d been sitting across from the garage for over two hours and my eyes were crossing out of boredom.
“This isn’t going anywhere,” I said to Lula. “He isn’t answering his phone, and there aren’t any lights on in the building.”
Lula is a former ’ho who Vinnie hired as a file clerk a while back. When files went digital he didn’t have the guts to fire her, so now Lula shows up every day for work and pretty much does whatever she wants. Mostly she hangs with me. She’s shorter than I am. She packs a lot more bodacious voluptuousness into her clothes than I do. Her hair is currently pink. Her skin is always brown. Her attitude is “Say what?”
I’m pale in comparison to Lula. I have shoulder--length mostly unmanageable curly brown hair that’s usually pulled into a ponytail, and I’ve been told I look a little like Julia Roberts when she played a hooker in Pretty Woman. I think this is mostly a compliment, right?
“My personal opinion is that this loser skipped town,” Lula said. “It’s not like he got family here. And we’re not lookin’ at someone with a active social life. Only time this man goes out is to hijack a truck, and he got a crimp put in that activity.”
Lights flashed at the cross street and an eighteen--wheeler chugged toward us and parked in front of the lot attached to the garage. The lot was enclosed by a six--foot--high chain link fence topped with razor wire. A man swung down from the cab of the truck and walked to the gate. He fiddled with the lock and the gate swung open.
“It’s him,” Lula said, sticking her hand into her big bedazzled purse and rooting around in it looking for her gun. “It’s that punk--ass Larry Virgil. I told you he’d be back. I got a gun in here somewhere. Hold on while I get my gun.”
“We don’t need guns,” I said. “He’s not known for being armed. All we have to do is wait for him to get inside and then we’ll sneak in and slap the cuffs on him.”
“I got it,” Lula said. “I got my gun. Let’s go!”
“Not yet,” I said.
Too late. Lula was out from behind the wheel of her Firebird, running across the road, waving her gun and yelling, “Bond enforcement!”
Virgil went deer in the headlights for a moment, then bolted for the corner with Lula in pursuit. Even in the dark of night I could see that Lula was running flat--out in her spike--heeled Via Spigas. Her spandex miniskirt was up around her waist, and one of her basketball--sized boobs had popped out of her tank top.
“Stop or I’ll shoot you dead,” Lula yelled at Virgil.
I was running behind Lula, trying to close in on her. “Don’t you dare shoot him,” I shouted. “No shooting!”
Virgil crossed the street and ran back toward the garage. He reached Lula’s red Firebird, wrenched the door open, jumped in, and took off.
“He got my Firebird!” Lula shrieked. “He got my baby! And my purse is in there too. I personally bedazzled that purse. It was one of a kind. And it got all my makeup in there.”
“Guess you left the key in the ignition,” I said, gasping for air, coming alongside Lula.
“And you told me not to shoot him,” Lula said. “This is all your fault. If I put some holes in him this would never have happened.”
“I’ll call it in to the police,” I said.
“I’m not waiting for no police,” Lula said. “I’m going after that punk--ass.”
“You won’t catch him on foot.”
“I’m not going on foot. I’m taking his truck.”
“Do you know how to drive a truck?”
“Sure I know how to drive a truck,” Lula said. “What’s to know?”
She got a foot onto the first step up to the cab but couldn’t get any lift.
“This here stupid thing is too high,” Lula said. “Get your hand under my ass and give me a shove up.”
“Not for all the tea in China,” I said.
“Then go around and pull me in.”
I climbed into the cab from the passenger side, crawled over, and gave Lula a hand up.
“This is a bad idea,” I said. “You haven’t a clue where he’s headed. He’s disappeared, and on top of that he probably stole this truck.”
“I know where he’s going,” Lula said. “He’s going to the chop shop on Stark. He’s gonna sell my Firebird off for pieces. That’s what these creeps do. They got no respect for people’s personal vehicles.”
I took my cellphone out of my pocket. “I’m calling it in.”
Lula stared at the dash. “There’s a awful lot of doohickeys here.”
“I thought you said you knew how to drive one of these.”
“I’m just sayin’ this here’s a fancy rig. It got a cup holder and everything.” She looked down at the floor. “It got a lot of pedals down there. What the heck is that big one?”
“That’s the clutch pedal.”
“Yeah, it’s all coming back to me. I used to drive my Uncle Jimmy’s dump truck before I got established as a ’ho.”
She planted a Via Spiga on the clutch pedal and shifted. “Here goes nothing.”
The truck lurched forward and ground through a gear.
“That didn’t sound good,” I said.
“No problem,” Lula said. “It don’t matter if we lose a gear or two on account of this baby got a lot of them.”
We slowly drove down the street.
“This here’s a piece of cake,” Lula said.
She turned a corner and took out a trash receptacle.
“Uh, you might have cut that corner a little tight,” I said.
“Yeah, but did you see how smooth this beauty rolled over that garbage can? It’s like driving a tank.”
“There’s a red light at the cross street,” I said. “You know how to stop, right?”
“I step on the brake.”
“Yeah, but will the big trailer behind us stop at the same time?”
Lula looked down at the floor. “I guess it’s all hooked together being that I only see one brake pedal.”
“The light! The road!” I yelled.
Lula sailed through the intersection.
“You just ran the light!” I said.
“Oops,” Lula said. “My bad. Good thing there weren’t any cars there.”
I caught flashing strobes in my side mirror. “I think we have a cop behind us,” I said. “You should pull over.”
“No way,” Lula said. “It’ll waste my time and I gotta get to the chop shop before they start on my Firebird. I’ll outmaneuver the guy behind me.”
“You’re driving a truck! You can’t even turn a corner, much less outmaneuver someone.”
“Boy, you’re getting cranky. Anyways, this could be a good thing. What we got here is a police escort. He’ll come in handy when we get to Stark Street and we confront Larry Virgil. This is our lucky day.”
The cop car zipped past us and came to a stop just before the next intersection, blocking our way. Two patrolmen got out, guns drawn.
“Hit the brakes,” I said to Lula. “Hit the brakes!”
Lula stomped on the brake pedal, and the rig slowed down but didn’t stop. The patrolmen jumped out of the way, and Lula punted the patrol car halfway down the block before bringing the semi to a stop.
“It don’t exactly stop on a dime,” Lula said.
One of the cops approached. I rolled the window down and grimaced. It was Eddie Gazarra. We went to school together, and now he was married to my cousin Shirley the Whiner.
“Hey, Eddie,” I said. “How’s it going?”
“Oh crap,” Eddie said.
Lula leaned over and looked past me to Eddie. “We gotta get going. That moron Larry Virgil stole my car and I gotta get to Stark Street before my baby’s nothing but spare parts. So I’d appreciate it if you could get your patrol car out of my way.”
Eddie and I looked down the street at what was left of the patrol car. It wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
“Sorry about your car,” I said to Eddie. “Lula didn’t totally have the hang of driving this thing.”
Eddie’s partner, Jimmy, was standing alongside him. Our paths had crossed on a couple occasions, but I didn’t actually know him. He was hands on hips looking like he thought this was funny but was trying not to laugh out loud.
“You’re supposed to ask to see her license and registration,” Jimmy said.
“My license is in my purse which is in my car which has been stolen,” Lula said. “And what you’re doing here is impeding the progress of justice.”
“You know this truck was hijacked, right?” Eddie asked me.
“Not exactly,” I said. “Lula and I were staking out Virgil’s garage, and he pulled up in this truck. One thing led to another and here we are.”
“Are we going to arrest them?” Jimmy asked, still grinning.
“No, we aren’t going to arrest them,” Eddie said. “Her grandmother would make my life a living hell.”
“What do you want to do about the car?” Jimmy asked Eddie.
“Get a tow truck out here. And report the Firebird to dispatch.”
“It’s red,” Lula told Jimmy. “And it’s got a one--of--a--kind bedazzled purse in it.”
I swung down out of the cab. “If it’s okay with you I’ll call for a ride.”
“You calling Morelli?” Eddie asked.
Joe Morelli is a Trenton cop working crimes against persons. He’s also my boyfriend.
“No,” I said to Eddie. “I’ll grab a ride in one of Ranger’s patrol cars. And I can get him to check with the chop shop to make sure they don’t take Lula’s car apart.”
Ranger is a former Special Forces operative turned businessman and security expert. He’s six feet of perfectly toned muscle. He’s my age, but he’s ages beyond me in life experience and street smarts. His coloring and heritage are Latino. He’s single and intends to stay that way. He owns Rangeman, an exclusive security firm housed in a stealth building in downtown Trenton.
“Sounds like a plan,” Eddie said. He hitched a thumb in Lula’s direction. “You’re taking her with you?”
“I guess.”
“She’s going to have to come in and file an accident report tomorrow. I imagine by then you’ll have come up with an explanation.”
“Yeah. I owe you.”
“Good,” Eddie said, “because I need a babysitter next Saturday.”
I squelched a grimace. Eddie’s kids were monsters. “I’ll be there,” I told him.
I made a short call to Ranger and joined Lula and Eddie at the side of the truck.
“This is a freezer truck,” Lula said. “What do you suppose Larry Virgil was gonna do with it? You think he has a big--ass freezer in his garage? How was he gonna store all the frozen stuff until he could turn it around?”
“Maybe it’s empty,” I said. “Maybe he already offloaded the ice cream somewhere.”
“This was reported stolen by Bogart Ice Cream,” Eddie said. “The compressor is running, so it’s probably still full of ice cream.” He walked to the back door. “No security seal. It’s just padlocked.”
“I could shoot the padlock off,” Lula said, “and then we could see what we got in here.”
Eddie cut his eyes to Lula.
“That would be if I had a gun,” Lula said, thinking twice about her offer since she didn’t have a permit to carry concealed.
“Hey, Jimmy,” Eddie yelled. “Look in the cab and see if you can find the key to the padlock for the back door.”
Jimmy climbed into the cab and swung down with the key. Eddie took the key, opened the door to the freezer truck, and a body fell out. We all jumped back.
“What the hell?” Jimmy said.
It was a chocolate--covered man, sprinkled with chopped pecans, totally frozen. Hard to tell if it was a real corpse or a solid chocolate novelty item.
We all looked down at it.
“That better not be a dead person,” Lula said. “On account of you know how I feel about dead people. I’m not in favor of them.”
“Could just be a big popsicle,” Jimmy said, toeing the chocolate guy.
“I don’t think so,” Lula said. “It don’t got no stick up its hoo--hoo.”
“Call it in,” Eddie said to Jimmy. “And tell them to get CSI out here before he melts.”
“Maybe we should put him back in the freezer truck,” I said to Eddie.
“Yeah,” Eddie said. “I guess we could do that.”
No one made a move to pick up the chocolate guy.
“Or we could leave him here,” I said.
“That got my vote,” Lula said. “I’m not touching him, in case he got the dead cooties.”
“Keep your eye on him,” Eddie said to me. “I’m going to see if I can get the trunk open on the squad car so I can get some crime scene tape and rubber gloves.”
Lula looked into the trailer. “They had him jammed up next to the back door,” Lula said. “The rest of the truck is filled with cartons of Bogart
ice cream. Somebody’s gonna be real disappointed in the morning if they don’t get their ice cream delivery. Personally I’m a Mo Morris ice cream person as opposed to a Bogart ice cream person. Not that I’d turn my nose up at a carton of this here ice cream if it accidentally fell out of the truck.”
“That would be tampering with evidence,” Jimmy said.
“Just sayin’.”
Eddie returned with some yellow tape and a box of disposable gloves.
“I’d be willing to help,” Lula said, “but those gloves are the wrong size for me.”
“They’re one--size--fits--all,” Eddie said.
“Nuh--uh,” Lula said. “They wouldn’t look good on me, and they’d ruin my nail varnish.”
A shiny black Porsche Cayenne drove up and eased to a stop, and Ranger got out. He was dressed in Rangeman black fatigues. He’s the boss, but he still works alongside his men if the threat level is high or if they’re short--handed. He walked over to me and looked down at the chocolate man.
“Nice touch with the chopped nuts,” Ranger said. “Who is he?”
“Don’t know,” Eddie said. “I don’t want to go through his pockets and ruin the chocolate.”
Eddie and Ranger pulled on rubber gloves, crammed the stiff back into the truck, and closed the door on him.
I got into the front of the Porsche with Ranger, and Lula got into the back. We drove to Stark Street in silence, and Ranger parked in front of the chop shop. A shiny black Rangeman Ford Explorer idled in the driveway. Lula’s red Firebird was parked next to the Explorer. A Rangeman guy who looked like the Hulk except for the part about being green got out of the Explorer and walked over to us.
“The Firebird was just dropped off,” he said to Ranger, handing him the car keys. “It seems to be undamaged. There’s a purse in the backseat.”
“Any sign of Larry Virgil?” Ranger asked.
“No. I guess he left the car here and took off.”
Ranger handed the keys over to Lula.
“I got my baby back,” Lula said, taking the keys, exiting the Porsche. “Anything I can ever do for you, just let me know,” she said to Ranger. She looked the Hulk over. “You too, big, black, and bad--ass. Anything you need, you just ask Lula.”

•   •   •

Ranger drove away, leaving his man grinning at Lula.
“She’ll take him apart and won’t put him back together again,” Ranger said to me. “Is your car at the office?”
“No. Lula picked me up at home.”
“Babe,” Ranger said.
“Babe” covers a lot of ground for Ranger, depending upon the inflection. Tonight it was said softly with an undertone of desire, as if he might take me home and stay awhile. It gave me an instant rush, and heat curled through a bunch of my internal organs. I did my best to squash the heat and ignore the rush, but in the process of ignoring the rush I inadvertently gave up a sigh.
“What?” Ranger asked.
“Morelli.”
Morelli and I have had an on again, off again relationship since I was five years old. Lately when we’re off again, Ranger swoops in. At first glance it might appear that I’m lacking in moral character to be bouncing around between men like this, but it’s only two men. I mean, it’s not like I’m dating a football team. And let’s be honest about this. These guys are both twelve on a scale of one to ten. And I might only be a six. So how lucky am I? A couple weeks ago, in a moment of euphoria, Morelli and I agreed to become engaged to be engaged. It was a good moment, but I think it’s a little like planning on winning the lottery or contemplating losing five pounds. I mean, what are the chances of it actually happening?
“Unfortunate,” Ranger said, “but the night wasn’t a complete loss. I got to see a dead guy dressed up like a Bogart Bar. What were you doing with the freezer truck?”
“Lula and I were staking out Larry Virgil, and he drove up in the semi. One thing led to another. Blah blah blah. And Lula crashed the truck into Eddie Gazarra’s squad car.”
“And the deceased?”
“We opened the door to look inside and the guy fell out.”
“As it turns out,” Ranger said, “I’ve been hired by Harry Bogart. He wants increased security in his factory. For years he’s been engaged in an ice cream war with Mo Morris. In the past it’s been confined to competitive pricing, ripping off recipes, ads that pushed the boundaries of libel, and occasionally a shouting match at a family function.”
“They’re related?”
“Cousins.”
“And I guess they don’t like each other.”
“Not even a little. Lately bad things have been happening to Harry Bogart. Salmonella in the double chocolate. A bomb hoax that shut down production for an entire day. One of the freezers was down for the night and literally a ton of ice cream melted. Bogart is sure it’s Mo Morris out to ruin him, but he can’t prove anything.”
“So he’s hired you.”
“His factory is old--school. No security cameras. No instant alerts when equipment goes down. Locks that can be opened with a nail file. I guess he’s never needed more. It’s not like he’s doing nuclear research.”
“You’re fixing all that.”
“Yes, but it takes time. It’s a big job. He needs new wiring. He has to approve the system design. I’d like to give him a couple men on foot patrol until we get everything up and running, but he refuses. He says ice cream is happiness and comfort and his customers would turn to birthday cake and mac and cheese if they thought his ice cream was under siege.”
“He sounds like a nice man.”
“He’s ruthless and miserly. So far I haven’t seen evidence of nice.”
“He makes good ice cream.”
Ranger nodded. “So I’ve been told.”
“Do you think the dead guy could be Harry Bogart?”
“No. Wrong body type. Bogart is a big man.”
“Eats a lot of ice cream?”
“Eats a lot of everything.” Ranger turned in to my parking lot. “I need someone to go inside the two ice cream factories and look around. Do you have time to moonlight for me?”
“What would I do?”
“Most of the line workers are women, so you would blend in. I’d put you on the line to start. All you’d have to do is keep your ears open and look around. I’m told that everyone gets to take a pint of ice cream home with them at the end of the shift in Mo Morris’s plant.”
“Hard to pass that up.”
Ranger stopped in front of my apartment building’s back door. I made a move to get out of the car, and he pulled me to him and kissed me. The kiss was light but lingering, sending a clear message of checked passion. He released me and relaxed back into his seat.
“I’ll make the arrangements for you to start work at Bogart’s plant and be back in touch,” Ranger said.
It took me a couple beats to get myself together. “Okay then,” I said. “Be careful driving home.”
“Babe,” Ranger said.

Morelli was on my couch watching television as I walked in. His big mostly golden retriever, Bob, was on the couch with him. There was a takeout pizza box on the coffee table.
Morelli looked up at me and grinned. “Have a good night?”
“Eddie Gazarra called you, didn’t he?”
“Cupcake, everyone called me, including your mother and the Trenton Times.”
“News travels fast.”
“Not every day someone gets dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with nuts. Usually people in Trenton just get stabbed and shot.”
I squeezed between Morelli and Bob, flipped the lid up on the pizza box, and took a piece. “I thought you might have gotten the call on this one.”
“I just came off a double shift so I was low in the rotation. Butch Zajak pulled it.”
“I can’t stop thinking about the dead man.”
“Yeah, me too. Eddie said he was dressed up like a Bogart Bar. I don’t suppose you have any.”
“No, but the freezer truck was filled with cartons of them. It was like the man in the truck was
part of the Bogart Bar run.”
“All this talk about Bogart Bars is making me feel romantic,” Morelli said.
Here’s the deal with Morelli. Everything makes him feel romantic.
Morelli wrapped an arm around me and nibbled at my neck. “I’m thinking after the pizza what I need is dessert. Like a Bogart Bar.”
“I don’t have good feelings about Bogart Bars right now.”
“Okay, how about a hot fudge sundae?”
“I guess that would be okay.”
“Do you have ice cream? Chocolate sauce?” Morelli asked.
“No.”
“Some of that whipped cream in a can?”
“No.”
“No problem. I can use my imagination.”
I was warming to the idea.
“And then you know what comes next,” Morelli said.
“What?”
“I get to be the sundae.”
Damn! I knew there’d be a catch.

Make It Stop
By Dee Wilson
This will likely be my last purchase in the series. Whole chunks of text are direct from earlier books. The writing quality has continually depreciated over the last several books in the series, and I suspect they are largely being written by someone else. Not worth the time or the money. Re-read an older Plum instead, you will enjoy it more.

No more Plum PLEASE!!!
By Erin Owens
You just can't do it anymore. If it were a T.V. show it would have been canceled long ago. Not once did I laugh or remember why I have read all 23 books. It was garbage.

You had something so special in the beginning, and now the flame has burned out. Put it to rest. Give the true fans the respect to not continue this series any longer.

Only Ok
By Good2Go
I pre-ordered this book. I have never, ever done this with a Janet Evanovich book before.

The reason I did so this time was that I was so thrilled that Stephanie and Joe might have a closer relationship. That they might commit more than they do. I get the reasons why the author made Joe buy a billiard table instead of a ring for Stephanie--gotta keep the story going with what has sold so well in the past--but change is the beauty of life. There are heaps of little plot twists you could have if Joe and Stephanie did actually get engaged for real.

For Stephanie to sleep with Ranger . . . and not see that Ranger has also been dangling her on a string . . . makes her seem not capable of rational thought.

Stephanie admits she likes sex, but she's not that into it. Yet, her actions show something else. Instead of considering what Ranger told her about Joe dangling her on a string since she was five, she just gets mad and sleeps with Ranger. Not so smart, number one. Number two, how the heck she can look Joe in the face is beyond me. It's hard to relate to someone that would do something like this.

I've come to the opinion that these are hardly romance novels. They are more comedic bounty hunter novels with larger-than-life characters. The novels draw in readers with humour and pure escapism. I don't know one woman who could sleep with two men and look her regular boyfriend in the eye again. Stephanie doesn't even question herself, and if she does, she has the reasoning of a five-year-old girl.

I was really, really looking forward to this novel as I thought "YES!!" Stephanie and Joe will move a bit further into their relationship and we'll get to read all the funny things about being engaged. Parties gone wrong. Losing a ring. Lula chasing down the guy who stole Stephanie's ring. Connie beating the S*&t out of him cause it's that time of the month. I mean the plot points could be endless and you could still move their relationship forward instead of this endless cycling. Maybe Joe and Stephanie never get married. That's not the point. Marriage really means squat as Stephanie knows with her first marriage. It would be good for her to examine these feelings a bit. Show some character growth and still have the laughs. I really don't care if they never get married, but Stephanie is certainly not exclusive to Joe and, for all the readers can guess at, he might not be exclusive to her. At this stage, I really hope he isn't. I get this uncomfortable feeling that they're not meant to be together and that she'd be better off with Ranger as marriage is not on the cards either way.

I want to say that I have been in a committed relationship for well on 21 years. His grandmother hated that we didn't get married, but she never told me. We have three kids together. We are faithful and happy. But yeah, we're still engaged. lol. So I know first hand that there is heaps of comedic fodder for an engaged couple that refuse to get married.

If the author still wants Stephanie to stay footloose and fancy free, then I suggest cutting ties to both Joe and Ranger. Meet a few more guys and see if that inspires a bit of action from Joe and Ranger.

I think it was kind of a dirty trick to make readers think Stephanie and Joe's relationship would progress more and then to dash all our hopes and have her sleeping with both men. I'd say, yes, she does love sex. No, she's not that enamored with Joe. If Ranger wanted her for good, she'd be on him like a shot.

Stephanie is a woman that can get the hot cop, the deep, dark chocolate Ranger who is also super cool, and she's also incredibly awesome at tackling FTAs. However, she cannot commit to one man fully, she's spinning her wheels in life, and at the same time, gouging a nice bog for herself. She's bogged down. Stuck in the mud. Someone like her needs freedom, so she has freedom with men, with her job, but she cannot choose between the two, so readers can't relate to her. Yes, we get that the author likes to show she can have sex with two hot men. But, Stephanie's clear lack of integrity leaves a gritty aftertaste.

Looking at Projections in a Positive Way
By M. Nuanez
This book is for the person who is looking for a positive understanding of projections, not for the person who is looking for pathology. It is easy to understand and has a premise that makes a lot of sense. It helped me to gain an understanding of how projections work and how they can teach you a lot about yourself and your own "inner gold". In looking at my past projections, I realized that the good qualities I was projecting on someone else were, in reality, my own inner traits. It is similar to the "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". Too much is written about projections that deals with the negative consequences of projections and the pathology of the person doing the projecting. Excellent book.

Go on read it, change your life, the light is here.
By Just a guy in Oregon
I'm a person with little knowledge of projection or Jung. How found this book is too long a story. I'llneed to cryptically tell just a bit of it though the entire story might make an entertaining book.

This small book revealed more to me on the first of many readings than any other single "book". It will lead me to more of this great man's works. It answered many questions about my life and feelings that have perplexed and baffled me for four decades. Someone once asked me why I loved them so much. The person wanted to know what it was about them in particular. I had no answer. I do now.

To quote the author..." The meaning of my life has suddenly appeared in the glow in your eyes."

The fearful empathy I had discovered in myself had found a match and fried all my circuits. What I would give to be able to transport this book back to 1969. It would have made such a difference.

Some people are very adept at taking the "gold"of others and fashioning it into positive movement. Having a guidebook on how to approach such power would have been a wondrous thing. Without it we can be blinded by the light.

I find, not to cast any merit on my humble self, that the author and I share several traits and life experiences. I too ( pages 8-9 ) once shot a small animal for sport and recoiled at what it gave me and what it took away. Like the author I never did this again. As he says I was both "proud and horrified" at the same time. A terrible combination for one who does not understand what is happening.

Like the author my father ( p. 12 ) didn't really father me. Ah, archetypes and male rites of initiation. Yes,I begin to see the power and vital importance of myth and where my life path mght have led. The book showed me that I could have been a lifelong friend of this one to whom I transferred so much gold without knowing. Yet, because I erred and wanted to mix "levels" the gold could never be returned. I forgive myself.

I hear the author saying that I was "personally unlucky". I agree with him ( p.61 ) that "The more sensitive and intelligent you are, the deeper the hole might be." ( that we find we have suddenly fallen into in midlife ). I also agree that the visionary female is vital and that ( p.59 ) "Every man has a double anima. He comes factory equipped---it is absolutely ingrained---with two visions of woman."

I agree that Western culture takes much of our humanity in the bargain we make for our cause and effect rationality. It takes more than most of us every comprehend.

This book is a starting point for me...the tip of the wedge with which I might finally open and understand why an "intuitive introvert" like myself ( the author uses that exact phrase to describe himself ) would in a moment of time long past attempt to crush and destroy his intolerable unendurable empathy as he finds himself trapped on a reef with life fulfilling perfection in sight but unreachable. The author followed his muse and I attempted to destroy mine. Reader: don't try this at home.

But, remember the wedge....this book. I do not exaggerate. Perhaps you're a rationalist, an engineer or scientist, who also has a terrible secret: That you used to write poetry but stopped cold at a young age when confronted by a very bright light you could not understand or live without and the only apparent option being to alter yourself into one who could survive the loss but was not you.

I hope this review ( and it's unposed and/or unanswered questions ) will lead at least a few to read it. It can change your life for the better. Incomprehensible as it may sound this book, among other things, will help me deal with the amazing fact that I too, much later in life, had a cat of the same name as the person with whom I left all that gold.

Perhaps I will write another poem. It's been forty years this fall since I last did. I could not extinguish the light only bury it. Perhaps this powerful little book could help you uncover your long banished muse as well?

Solid information that makes you think
By T. Gale
Robert Johnson is a master at laying out the inter-workings of projection. Reader needs to have a little psychological background to fully get the message of the book -- each of us holds the answers to our most important questions in life. All we need do is look to our own behavior, thoughts and feelings - the answers lie there.

Golembiewski identifies the many forces and factors propelling us into the age of diversity in organizations—ethical, political, philosophic, demographic, and so on—and details the historical and contemporary approaches. Most practice has focused on a "level playing field" or equal opportunity and "tilting the playing field" or equal outcomes. This volume focuses on diversity as a strategic device rather than as a nicety rooted in behavioral and organizational research. Managing diversity successfully in organizations requires a thorough understanding of management infrastructure that is consistent with diversity--especially structures of work, policies, and procedures that institutionalize and build diversity.

Review
"Insightful and wise, and a masterful treatise about fundamental organizational reforms, this volume should be read by everyone seriously interested in bringing about real organizational improvement. Golembiewski shows how diversity is not a problem to be solved but is symptomatic of bureaucratic structures and the degenerative managerial values and assumptions they promote."
—Craig C. Lundberg, Cornell University

"This book is clearly among the very best writings of a distinguished and productive scholar. It is a major contribution to the field of public administration generally and to the important topics of diversity and reinventing government specifically. Professor Golembiewski presents us with an insightful critique, with thoughtful alternatives, and with a philosophy and map for operating with a more culturally diverse workforce. I am confident that other scholars and graduate students will find this book invaluable."—Dennis L. Dresang, University of Wisconsin-Madison

ONE OF THE BEST, PERHAPS THE BEST, BIOGRAPHY OF HUME
By Steven H Propp
Ernest Campbell Mossner was an English professor at the University of Texas at Austin. His biography of the Scottish empiricist and skeptical philosopher David Hume is perhaps the best and most detailed available.

Mossner notes that "Hume was the first distinguished man of letters in Britain to make a fortune from literature alone," and adds that "The young Boswell in 1762 had no hesitation in naming Hume as 'the greatest Writer in Britain.'" (Later in life, Boswell wrote, "Were it not for his infidel writings, every body would love him. He is a plain, obliging, kindhearted man.")

Concerning Hume's reputation as an infidel, "The religous beliefs of David Hume were probably lost while he was at college or shortly thereafter." Mossner notes that "it is also clear that those religious beliefs were relinquished under philosophical pressure---that Hume reasoned himself out of religion." Nevertheless, he was no polemical writer. In his own brief autobiography, Hume noted, "I had fixed a Resolution, which I inflexibly maintained, never to reply to any body; and not being very irascible in my Temper, I have easily kept myself clear of all literary Squabbles."

About Hume's famous The History of England (1826), Mossner writes, "What Hume had given the world in his 'History of England' was a broad, sweeping narrative of the national developments, philosophically coherent, artistically ordered, and pre-eminently readable. He made no pretense of 'research' scholarship but anticipated the modern synthetic historian in uniting and enlivening the sometimes ponderous research of others."

Mossner covers the famous dispute between Hume and Rousseau, after which Hume sighed, "my affair with Rousseau is now finally and totally at an end, at least on my part: for I never surely shall publish another line on that subject." Mossner notes that "In general, the world agreed that Hume had acted the part of a benevolent and virtuous friend..."

Mossner observes that "David Hume in later life, in Italy, and France, and Scotland, was to prove himself a man of normal sexual desires." Late in life, "He continued to enjoy ... the company of attractive adn vivacious women, and in his autobiography was to write with studied understatement that, 'as I took a particular Pleasure in the company of modest women, I had no reason to be displeased with the Reception I met with from them."

Hume was a well-loved person. "Hume's jests with intimate friends are legion and his letters are replete with wit and with witticisms. The topic of his own obesity ... became a perennial favorite," and "the French found Hume to be truly le bon David: and their original admiration for his intellect was consequently augmented by affection for his person."

Mossner concludes by saying that "There can, likewise, be no doubt that in his life he followed admirably his own caution: 'Be a philosopher, but amidst all your philosophy, be still a man.'"

This book is ESSENTIAL READING for anyone interested in Hume, philosophy, or the lives of philosophers.

Fine Biography
By R. Albin
This is only modern biography of Hume. Very well written and researched, it concentrates on Hume's personal life and career as a man of letters. Hume is a wonderful subject for a biography; an important figure who is simultaneously a warm and attractive personality. Mossner does an excellent job of detailing Hume's personal life, friendships, and literary career. For individuals really interested in Hume, this book is a treasure trove of information. It is also a very valuable work on the intellectual culture of 18th century Scotland and the Enlightenment in general. Mossner describes very well the intellectual atmosphere of lowland Scotland, which produced not only Hume, but Adam Smith, the great chemist Joseph Black (though Mossner mentions him only as a physician), and numerous other important intellectuals. Mossner shows also the international quality of the Enlightenment. Within months of publication, Hume's Treatise on Human Nature was mentioned in German publications, and his later, more popular works were known across Europe. Hume had an international, even intercontinental (Benjamin Franklin), set of correspondents and friends. This books is a valuable companion to reading Hume's work.
What this book is not, however, is a full scale critical work. Actual discussion and analysis of Hume's important philosophical work is relatively brief. Nor is there much explicit discussion of the origins of Hume's thought in the work of prior 18th and 17th century thinkers. This biography was last revised in the late 1970s and apparently not greatly changed from the original version published in 1954. Over the course of the 20th century, Hume came to be regarded as one of the real titans of Western thought, with a corresponding increase in the secondary literature on Hume. We also know much more about the 18th century and the Enlightenment than Mossner. There is definitely a need for a major critical biography of Hume, though producing such a work could easily consume a scholar's career.

Best modern biography of Hume the man.
By Montana Skyline
Mossner's book generally is considered the modern "standard" biography of Hume, and rightly so: It is an extensively researched and comprehensive narrative chronology of Hume's personal and public life, full of telling detail and anecdotes. Mossner unapologetically speculates on interesting points when the research does not supply an answer, but does so transparently and usually convincingly. Anyone with an interest in the man, as well as the philosopher, likely will enjoy this book, as I did.

A significant caveat (as noted in a useful comment on this site by R. Albin): This is not a critical examination of Hume's philosophical arguments or intellectual influences as such, although one certainly will learn the gist of Hume's arguments and much about their context. Other, recent books on Hume may supply this shortcoming. I have recommend Nicholas Phillipson's "David Hume: The Philosopher as Historian," which specifically considers Hume's treatment of history and method of historical writing. I also note that a recently published work by James Harris aims to provide that missing critical analysisin his "Hume: An Intellectual Biography." I have not yet read Harris's book, but expect that I will, as the description and initial reviews are encouraging. Finally, if you are looking for a modern, but much briefer introduction to Hume, you should consider Annette C. Baier's "The Pursuits of Philosophy: An Introduction to the Life and Thought of David Hume." It doesn't have the richness of Mossner's much book, but is nicely written and provides a solid introduction, along with some interesting reflections.

One warning (again, noted in some other comments): The Oxford University Press paperback version is disgracefully printed. The paper cover and binding are cheap, and the quality of the printing is terrible: The text spacing is inconsistent, the font is odd, and the print alternately fades and brightens throughout the book. If this were a $10 reprint, one would make allowances, but even acknowledging the length and density of the volume, the price makes the sloppy printing inexcusable. If I were looking for a new copy, I would look for a decent, used hardcover.

The Fall of the House of Cabal: A Novel (Johannes Cabal Novels), by Jonathan L. Howard

Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has come into possession of a vital clue that may lead him to his ultimate goal: a cure for death. The path is vague, however, and certainly treacherous as it takes him into strange territories that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before. The task is too dangerous to venture upon alone, so he must seek assistance, comrades for the coming travails.

So assisted―ably and otherwise―by his vampiric brother, Horst, and by the kindly accompaniment of a criminologist and a devil, he will encounter ruins and diableries, mystery and murder, the depths of the lowest pit and a city of horrors. London, to be exact.

Yet even though Cabal has risked such peril believing he understands the dangers he faces, he is still underestimating them. He is walking into a trap of such arcane complexity that even the one who drew him there has no idea of its true terrors. As the snare closes slowly and subtly around them, it may be that there will be no survivors at all.

The Fall of the House of Cabal is the fifth book in Jonathan L. Howard's acclaimed Johannes Cabal series.

Review

"Fans of Howard’s witty prose and morbid humor will not be disappointed; his characteristic blend of horror, comedy, fantasy, and drama is particularly effective in this installment. Cabal remains an entertaining antihero whose complexities have deepened over time, and the conclusion of the narrative threads that have spanned the previous four Cabal books is both satisfying and touching." ―Publishers Weekly

"Howard makes it look easy to paint a soul-stealing, murdering necromancer as a sympathetic character; that, folks, is worth the price of admission." ―San Diego Union-Tribune

"Howard is a supremely talented writer and the Johannes Cabal series makes for superb reading. It would be easy at this point to say if you like Rankin or Fforde or Pratchett or Holt, then you will love these books, but while it may well be true, it would be doing Howard a disservice." ―Sci-Fi-London

"Howard's Dreamlands will thrill fans of H.P. Lovecraft, but Cabal leaves a permanent mark on even the most fluid of landscapes, and Howard's writing shines, sketching out a personality both fascinating and heartbreaking." ―BookGeeks

"Cabal, the detective and necromancer, is full of charismatic amorality, making him both a classical and refreshing antihero." ―Time Out Chicago

"Jonathan L. Howard has such an effortless way with monsters and the undead that you might suspect him of being, like his creation, Johannes Cabal, a necromancer. The series is addictive." ―Richard Kadrey, author of the Sandman Slim series

"In the vein of the comic horror-fantasies of Tom Holt and Christopher Moore but substantially weirder." ―Booklist

"Johannes Cabal would kill me for saying this, but he's my favorite zeppelin-hopping detective. The fellow has got all the charm of Bond and the smarts of Holmes―without the pesky morality." ―Daniel H. Wilson, author of Robopocalypse

I refuse to believe it's over
By redrum90
I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye to this phenomenal series. A few years ago, fresh after getting my first Kindle (which was a big deal for an English language reader not living in an English speaking country) I randomly chose "Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer" as my next read. Oh boy, I was in for a ride. The adventures of a necromancer of some little infamy quickly became on of my favourite book series ever. A series which is now coming to a close (at least for the time being, as the author claims).

The fifth and final (?) book doesn't make this farewell easy - it might be the best in the series. It has everything that drawn me to Cabal's world in the first place, and much more. It's hilarious, well paced and action packed, with great dialogue and fantastic characters (can I get a Zarenyia spin-off series, pleaaase?). It's relentless, endless fun, and for that alone I encourage everyone to grab a copy. However, what really elevates the series for me is how well the author constructed our (anti?)hero Johannes Cabal, and how he lets him evolve. Creating a character that never fails to deliver laughs is one thing, but giving him depth displayed so naturally, in a way that never seems forced is a real accomplishment. Bravo, Mr. Howard!

So, my life of a reader will feel a bit emptier now that I have no Cabal novel to wait for (I am hoping for some short stories in the coming months, though). Nevertheless, I am grateful to Mr. Howard for sharing this five part awesomeness with us, excited about his other, future works and hoping that someday Cabal will return.

... Cabal series is (in my opinion) one of the best fantasy series of the last decade
By S. Baker
**Spoilers**The Cabal series is (in my opinion) one of the best fantasy series of the last decade. But this book fell short of the rest in this series for me. I feel like it got bogged down in its own style, and I ended up skipping half of it on my first read through and still understood the last chapter just fine. I thought Horst's characterization was a bit odd, I had never thought of him as an idiot before but this book took every opportunity it could to say "Oh yes, by the way, Horst is dumb". I get that he's in the company of Leonie and Johannes, but I always enjoyed how Horst was people-smart while Johannes was book-smart.

And I was really let down by the Red Queen, especially considering how much she was built up in the previous book. I was expecting an actual nemesis for Johannes, someone who could really challenge him, and even win in the end. It just left me going "eh" at the end.

I would still recommend this series to anyone who loves fantasy, the other books are still great enough to make it worth the time. And even this one had some great sections, I just don't think it's as good as the rest of the series.

peppered liberally with dry ridiculousness and wry humor to create something truly unique and fantastic. We are speaking here of
By The Irregular Reader
Fair Warning: This review will include major spoilers for the previous four Johannes Cabal books, as well as several of the short stories. If you haven’t read any of the previous books, you really should stop now and click HERE.

Now, on with the show.

If H.P. Lovecraft and Douglas Adams had a lovechild, that gibbering lunatic is surely Jonathan L. Howard. Howard (who does borrow from the Lovecraft mythos) uses a sense of cosmic horror, peppered liberally with dry ridiculousness and wry humor to create something truly unique and fantastic. We are speaking here of Johannes Cabal.

Readers of the previous books will know Johannes Cabal as a necromancer, formerly also the ringmaster of an infernal circus, foiler of despotic maniacs, wanderer of Dreamlands, and foiler of despotic maniacs’ daughters. He is the kind of cold-blooded analytical soul who makes Sherlock Holmes (and also Professor Moriarty) look like puppy hugging imbeciles in comparison.

This fifth book finds Cabal hot on the trail of his ultimate goal: a cure for death. Clues left behind by an old defeated enemy point to a metaphysical path which leads (theoretically) to the fountain of youth. Cabal, never one to be turned from his goal once his mind is set, must recruit the help of his vampire brother, Horst, along with what allies he may call upon (you’d be right in guessing that the list is not long) to tread this path and finally achieve his heart’s desire.

I am (obviously) a fan of Howard’s previous Johannes Cabal stories, and have been waiting quite (im)patiently for this one to come out. I’m pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Howard brings back a few beloved characters from previous books, and it is always delightful to watch the misanthropic Cabal navigate the world of human social interaction.

So bottom line: if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll be quite pleased with the latest book, and should begin reading immediately. If you’e never heard of the series, you really shouldn’t have read this far. But as you are reading this, you should go get the first book in the series: Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, and begin reading immediately.
