About the Author
Michael Truitt was diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy when he was six years old. Growing up with MD, he was the target of many bully attacks and then became his brother’s defender by protecting him from bullies for a good part of their childhood. These types of hurtful experiences have not challenged Michael’s steadfast belief that physically limited individuals can be vessels of deep faith and inspiration to others. a classical book on linear model theory

This is a very good book, written by a biometrician whose expertise in the area of linear models is unquestionable. However, it is not for the faint-hearted when used as a textbook, so the completely negative reaction from a previous reviewer is to be expected. Although written more than thirty years ago, this book is still a standard reference.

This book is a classic. It might be recommended for the advanced reader but not for an introductory approach. When previous books about this subject have been studied, Linear Models provides an excelent opportunity to deepen on unbalanced data statistics. Simultaneous reading of Matrix Algebra Useful for Statistics by the same author might improve insights on many central topics that are useful for scientists and applied statisticians. With that background, Linear Models is a five star book.

Excelente como libro de consulta, referencia o material académico

El título del libro resume perfectamente y con total fidelidad el contenido del mismo: es la descripción de la historia de la economía desde sus orígenes en el neolítico hasta nuestros días, incluyendo un epílogo en el que el autor da alguna pincelada personal sobre el futuro de la economía. Ése es de hecho el único fragmento del libro donde hay una aportación personal y una opinión. En el resto del libro se explica la historia de la economía. No se narra, no se relata, no se cuenta. No es una historia novelada ni escrita en primera o tercera persona. Es simplemente la descripción de los hechos desde un punto de vista económico y cómo ha evolucionado. Hay numerosas referencias a eruditos e historiadores, citando fuentes y estudios para apoyar lo descrito.
El libro en mi opinión está más orientado al entorno académico (como libro de consulta, referencia o material de estudio) que al público en general. Aquellos que busquen una historia de la economía contada de manera amena o en forma de novela no llegarán a acabar el libro. Aquéllos que busquen sin embargo un libro detallado, completo y con información contrastada, verán cumplidas sus expectativas.
A mi personalmente me ha enseñado mucho, porque me tomé su lectura como un curso de historia económica a distancia.

The only book you'll need

George's book is the only one you'll need to do your statistics. It got me through graduate school. Field's book is good too, but contains much more math than some of us need to see. If you want something that will clearly and simply tell you what buttons to push to do what you need to write your thesis or dissertation, George's book is one you want.

Excellent Packaging and Great Condition

This product was advertised to be in "Very Good" condition, with a detailed description stating the high quality of the product (e.g. square spine and corners). My high hopes for a book in excellent condition were fulfilled when I received a book that was like new. It was packaged in plastic and bubble wrap to ensure the condition of the book, and when I gave it to my brother, who is a die hard FRIENDS fan, he was extremely surprised and excited to own this special book. Palms are an important plant family. Ornamentally, they symbolize a tropical landscape to most of us; economically, they provide important products to millions of people in both subsistence and modern commercial economies. Although both of these books provide a wealth of information on palms, they differ in coverage. Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas takes a botanical approach to help readers identify palms naturally occurring in the Americas. A brief introduction and a key to the genera are followed by descriptions of 67 individual species, including identification, characteristics, habitat, and interesting notes. A separate section of 64 color plates, a distribution map for each species, checklists, and a detailed bibliography and index are also offered. Species descriptions are written by taxonomists but are reasonably comprehensible and interesting to the amateur; unfortunately, there is no glossary to explain technical terms. Palms Throughout the World, an expansion of Jones's popular Palms in Australia (1984), takes a horticultural approach. Its descriptions of 800 species in 123 genera include cultivation and propagation information as well as descriptions, and its 350 color photographs are conveniently located next to the species they illustrate. The long introductory section includes information on the structure, biology, and economic uses of palms as well as their disease and cultivation requirements. A glossary is provided. Both works would be useful in academic horticultural libraries. Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas is the only comprehensive field guide for its area, although Natalie Uhl and John Dransfield's definitive Genera Palmarum (Allen Pr., 1987) provides more detailed botanical information. A must have!

This is probably the most useful book for anyone involved in plant identification, such as Forest Engineers, specially those working in tropical America, where one often encounters many kinds of palms in the field, but until now it was not easy to identify them, and palms are mostly overlooked because they have the reputation of being difficult to identify. This book changes it all, and it's definitely a must-have.

if you're interested in neotropical palms, you ought to buy this excellent guide. all three authors are considered to be highly esteemed authorities who know their stuff very well. the description said it had approximately 380 pages, but together with all the appendices and photo pages, the total number of pages gets to 500.

The American palm compendium

Palms are a very conspicuous feature of the tropical landscape, whether in the wilds of Central and South America or in the suburban environments further north. They are also important economically (usually as fruit crops) and culturally (having uses as diverse as roofing, as material for weaving hammocks as fodder for edible beetle larvae!). Since everyone knows what a palm is, yet most non-specialists cannot get much beyond that, this guide to their identification should fill a niche.

This is a field guide to the 550 species of palm occurring naturally in the American tropics. The taxonomic treatment seems to this non-specialist to be eminently sensible and many knotty systematic probems appear to have been carefully resolved. A 40 page appendix of accepted names helps clarify what has happened to some of the older synonyms, hybrid names and such.

The authors have crammed an awful lot of new and useful information into the three-hundred and fifty odd pages. A main key permits identification to genera with further keys sprinkled throughout the body of the book. There are handy introductions to families and genera. The text is succinct and well oriented towards field identification while the 236 photographs at the back allow the user to quickly narrow down the search by visual means. Maps are provided for every species - this must have been a huge task! - and country checklists provide a further tool for homing in on the plant in question.

In resume, this is a master work which will be seen in the field for decades to come. It should be high on the list of any tropical landscape gardener, horticulturalist, anthropologist, botanist or naturalist.

The literature about visualization has become increasingly large in the past decade or so. Few is the author of some of the most important books about it, such as 'Show Me the Numbers', 'Now I See It', and 'Information Dashboard Design'. Great intro to visual analytics sensemaking & thinking clearly

This book offers a clear case for data visualization with believable business examples that show how to find signals in noisy data. The admirable clarity of Stephen Few’s writing tells lucid stories of how to look at data so as to produce actionable insights. Few is fearless in condemning big data excesses such as those who claim that “more [data] trumps better”, which Few labels as “an ignorant claim.” Few counters the big data pressures for volume, velocity, and variety (3Vs) by celebrating the virtues of small, slow, and sure (3Ss). The remarkable aspect of this book is that it provides a solid course in statistics, but it replaces mathematical formulas with visually compelling examples. It deals with means, medians, distributions, and correlations for numeric data and also includes spatial data with well-crafted maps. I’m pleased that this book also covers advanced visualizations such as treemaps, parallel coordinates, and coordinated displays with highlighting and filtering. It closes with ample references and a personal moral perspective about seeing the world more clearly.

This book is a most excellent way of learning how to find, communicate, and use information. If you need these skills and you don't have time to read a pile of textbooks, this is a good place to start.

Data analysis is taught anywhere, but data synthesis is a much rarer skill. With Signal we have a resource that covers both of these angles, is easy to use, and comprehensive in coverage. This is an excellent standalone guide but would also be a great overview to the subject prior to deeper studies.

He went from putting the nail polish on his own nails (to test it) and criss-crossing the country by rail (to sell it) to, ultimately, a $5,000-a-day New York lifestyle complete with a 257-foot yacht, the Ultima II, whose gas tank cost $20,000 to fill and whose staterooms Revson liked to keep chilly enough, in the heat of the Caribbean, to require toasty electric blankets. A Fascinating Portrait of a Corporate Legend

I had read bits and pieces of this book, and wanted to read the whole story. I couldn't put it down! Andrew Tobias goes way behind the scenes to capture the man who was Revlon; the biggest and most flamboyantly-run cosmetics empire...before Estee Lauder , there was Charles Revson and Revlon. He was loathed, feared, repudiated and sometimes admired---the stories in this book are almost surreal in content. It is a lesson in history and how things used to be; before all of the politically-correct manure that passes for advertising in today's world. I strongly recommend this book; characters like Charles Revson do not exist anymore; they are, though, part of the American folklore and what Madison Avenue and the really big corporations used to be. It's How to Succeed in Business by Really Trying!
