From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up Annabel Greene seemingly had everything: cool friends, close family, good grades, and a part-time modeling career in town. But it all came crashing down, and Annabel has spent the summer in shaky, self-imposed exile. She finds herself dreading the new school term and facing, well, everyone again. The last thing she wants to do is revisit old friendships while the losses are painful, the secrets behind the rifts are almost unbearable. Her solid family seems fragile, too. What happened to cause the stiff silences and palpable resentments between her two older sisters? Why is no one in her loving but determinedly cheerful family talking about her middle sister's eating disorder? Annabel's devastating secret is revealed in bits and snatches, as readers see her go to amazing lengths to avoid confrontation. Caught between wanting to protect her family and her own struggles to face a devastating experience, Annabel finds comfort in an unlikely friendship with the school's most notorious loner. Owen has his own issues with anger, but has learned to control it and helps her realize the dangers of holding in her emotions. Dessen explores the interior and exterior lives of her characters and shows their flaws, humanity, struggles, and incremental successes. This is young adult fiction at its best, delving into the minds of complex, believable teens, bringing them to life, and making readers want to know more about them with each turn of the page. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. After being caught with her best friend's Sophie's boyfriend at a summer party, Annabel Greene is starting her junior year alone and ostracized. But what appeared to be infidelity was really attempted rape. Fans of Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak (1999) will find obvious parallels here, including the play on the title, but Dessen spins her own quality tale of a young girl finding her voice, and finding an audience. Annabel's troubles are exacerbated by her family's refusal to acknowledge its problems: middle sister Whitney's severe anorexia or the three sisters' waning interest in modeling. A budding friendship with classmate Owen, a dj at the community radio station who is never without music to drown out the silence, helps Annabel listen to her own heart and risk speaking out honestly. Characterization and dialogue are expertly done, and Owen's anger-management advice and efforts to broaden Annabel's music tastes ("Don't think, or judge. Just listen") strengthen the theme of the story: honesty. Teen girls who meet Dessen for the first time here will be looking for her backlist. Cindy Dobrez

Models, family, and bacon...
By Claire Hennessy
Sarah Dessen's latest novel focuses on Annabel, the youngest in her family and the sweet, nice one who avoids confrontation and, ever since becoming best friends with the popular-yet-caustic Sophie, avoids standing up for herself. Her family's attention is centred around her older sister Whitney and her eating disorder, and Annabel's white lies - telling her mom she's fine, not discussing the night when she and Sophie stopped being friends - keep things going smoothly. It's not until she meets Owen Armstrong, another 'outcast' at school who quotes Anger Management phrases at her, that she becomes aware of how often she lies, and more importantly, how often she simply fails to tell the truth. This is a story about a lot of things, from complex family relationships to the world of modeling to the importance of music, but mostly it's the story of one girl finding her voice, and letting people hear the sometimes painful but always true things that she needs to say.

Dessen's Magic Will Never Dissipate
By MG
How beautifully written this book is, I cannot even begin to explain, nor would I ever do it justice. It's hard to believe that Dessen's books keep getting better and better, because I always wonder how she's going to top the last one. Somehow, she always does, and in a way that leaves you desperate for more. I have never been one to re-read books, but I absolutely cannot lay this book to rest. I want to re-live the story, because I can't bear to let the characters go.

Annabel is facing the hardest school year of her life. She's dealing with a lot of family issues including her sister's severe battle with anorexia, and trying to tell her mother that she desperatly wants to quit modeling. Her ex-best friend Sophie no longer talks to her, because she thinks that Annabel slept with her boyfriend, but the truth is far deeper and the worst part is that nobody knows. Now that her friends have turned on her she has nobody until Owen Armstrong, the most unlikely person, befriends her and makes her see life in a new light.

Dessen did a beautiful job of portraying family relationships and how difficult it can be when you have to sacrifice for them. You feel so much a part of this book that it's as if you are sitting at the table with them arguing, crying, screaming, laughing, talking, or holding one another. The struggle with friendships is so real and honest that I'm sure every one of us can relate in some sense to the loss of a best friend, or a misunderstanding that never was resolved that Annabel deals with on a daily basis. The pain she has to endure while desperately hiding the truth from everyone else is incredible and you feel so deeply for her that it may bring you to tears or just want to reach into the book and give her a big hug.

Every young woman should read Dessen's books, but especially this one. It has so many lessons to offer girls on topics that are extremely important for them to be aware of. Everything from love and loss to anorexia and rape, this book has it all and it is so very beautifully done. I cannot express enough just how highly I reccomend this book to women of all ages, but especially to high school girls. Dessen is absolutely brilliant.

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Annabel Greene plays a girl who has everything in the commercial for Kopf's Department Store: she is the top student, popular cheerleader, dazzling prom queen surrounded by friends. In real life though, Annabel Greene is the total opposite. She has no best friend anymore because of Sophie, who ended up spreading rumors about Annabel after one little mistake that wasn't even Annabel's fault. Not only that, but Annabel has to deal with the awkward times at home with her sister's eating disorder, and Annabel not being comfortable about life and speaking her mind at all.

Then she meets a guy named Owen Armstrong, who isn't your usual Romeo, but Annabel learns something very valuable from him... truth. Owen Armstrong is a high schooler who is never parted with his ipod or CD player. Before Annabel was rejected by all of her friends, she had heard that Owen was a freak.Annabel had wondered what he was always listening to. When they become friends, he amazes her with his honesty and confidence. Soon, Annabel is telling Owen all of her feelings that she has wanted to get out for a long time, and they become close until she makes a big mistake-again.

I highly recommend this book for readers who like people like Meg Cabot and similar authors.Sarah Dessen has a way that keeps me interested in her story. If you have read certain books by Sarah Dessen too, you can recognise some of the characters in this story that is brought back from a different point of veiw which I thought was very cool.

I enjoyed reading this book because I was able to put myself into Annabel's shoes, and I wanted to just jump into the book and be her!

The Blood Mirror (Lightbringer Book 4), by Brent Weeks

The nail-biting continuation to the Lightbringer series from New York Times bestseller Brent Weeks.

When does an empire fall?
The Seven Satrapies have collapsed into four-and those are falling before the White King's armies.
Gavin Guile, ex-emperor, ex-Prism, ex-galley slave, formerly the one man who might have averted war, is now lost, broken, and trapped in a prison crafted by his own hands to hold a great magical genius. But Gavin has no magic at all. Worse, in this prison, Gavin may not be alone.
Kip Guile will make a last, desperate attempt to stop the White King's growing horde. Karris White attempts to knit together an empire falling apart, helped only by her murderous and possibly treasonous father-in-law Andross Guile.
Meanwhile, Teia's new talents will find a darker use-and the cost might be too much to bear.
Together, they will fight to prevent a tainted empire from becoming something even worse.

Mixed Bag
By S. A. Ford
Well, that was disappointing. Kind of.

First off, I feel I must warn potential readers that Blood Mirror is not, in fact, the last book in the Lightbringer series, as I thought, but rather the second to last. Undoubtedly, this unknown fact (to me) somewhat soured my experience of the book as a whole and, undoubtedly, I am somewhat to blame for not double/triple-checking the series length BEFORE reading. After all, fantasy authors do, unfortunately, have a habit of stretching things out once they have a hit on their hands. Weeks having changed it once from a trilogy to a quadrilogy(?) already, I thought this series was safe. Locked in. Apparently not. But, I digress. To the actual *penultimate* book itself.

Despite the initial grievance, this is not a bad book. Indeed, there is a lot of good stuff here, a lot of creativity, a lot to admire. The magic system, the fun interplay (for the most part) between the characters, the surrounding mythos of the world--all of that is still here. Some of it is expanded upon or, even, improved.

Kip, in particular, sees vast improvement in this installment. Previously, I must admit that I have always disliked this character and his POV chapters and I bemoaned it when the series began to shift away from Gavin and more toward his whinging (albeit fake) bastard. He was annoying and unfunny in a particularly painful, cringe-worthy sort of way (and not in the cute, adorkable way that Weeks was obviously trying very, very hard to evoke). In this book, however, his maturity grows in leaps and bounds and the evolving relationship between him and Tisis is one of the Blood Mirror's stronger points. So, yes, I actually found myself liking a few of Kip's POVs this time around, which was something of a shock.

Karris and Teia, meanwhile, are both serviceable. Neither have any WOW moments, but they both have stuff to do and that stuff is generally interesting. And that's all I have to say about that.

Gavin, though, is the best, as always, and he remains the primary reason I read this series. As in the Broken Eye, there is too little of him here when compared to the other POVs--but, as I expected this, I didn't mind the focus on the other characters overmuch. With him, the story always crackles on the page, and this book is no different.

I will quibble slightly, however, and say that it is in his plot line you can feel the stretching of these books the most. It's quite clear, as it was in the last, that Gavin's plot is ready to move on, to get going toward the end-game, but because Kip's and the rest aren't, Weeks has to make Gavin's chapters shorter and sparser and, in a sense, very Rand al'Thor-esque (which is both good and bad, as you Wheel of Time fans ought to know).

As for the actual writing, it is, like in the previous three, uneven. Weeks' inner dialogues go on far too long, explain things far too much, spell out what exactly precisely specifically the characters are feeling at all times, and generally illustrate an overall lack of trust in his reader to intuit anything on their own. If not for the cursing and violence, this series could very easily be put in the YA category. Every now and again, though, Weeks will go on these wonderful little runs that are both surprising and beautiful. A paragraph, a bit of dialogue, that is genuinely moving.

But alas, similarly, the tone is also all over the place. One minute characters are making fart jokes, the next they're saying ridiculously melodramatic things like 'I am become death'. Also, a character directly quotes Sartre, somehow, some way, and for some reason.

Basically, with Weeks one learns to take the good with the bad. Great, creative ideas; wildly varying execution of those ideas.

As for the last couple critiques, I fear I must dip briefly into virgin waters. So be warned:

SPOILERS AHEAD

Let's just cut right to the heart of the matter, shall we? Ret-conning. Others here have accused Gavin's backstory as presented in Blood Mirror as a rather extreme form of ret-conning, and I have to agree. At the very least, it feels something as a cheat. We the readers have always recognized the fact that it was a ridiculous notion that fake-Gavin had managed to smuggle real-Gavin into the center of a bustling, paranoid city and imprison him there without anyone the wiser. But the books previous to this one never wavered in the conviction of that notion and so we, the readers, went with it. We accepted it. Hell, we even got several POV chapters of real-Gavin trying to escape.

But now, it turns out that we were all just having a grand shared fictional hallucination--because real-Gavin was actually never imprisoned, he was killed by fake-Gavin ages ago, during their last battle. Mind blown, I suppose, even if it feels as though this was a twist either made up completely on the fly, or well after the second book was written.

There are other revelations made to fake-Gavin down in his colored prison that I won't go into here as, for the most part, they worked. This Fight Club twist was the only one that really had me rolling my eyes. Heavily

Now, on to the much maligned subplot with Tisis and her uncooperative loins. Yes, you read that right. There is a goodly portion of this book, an epic fantasy/adventure, devoted to a young teenage couple being unable to consummate their marriage due to the clenched too-tight muscles of a lady's nethers. Reading the other reviews, a lot of people seemed to have some hate for this one, but honestly I didn't mind it. It dragged on for far too long (penetration is only achieved, in fact, in the very last chapter and on the very last page of the book, which is--to be frank--an odd choice) and it reminded me of a 30 Rock episode wherein Liz Lemon experiences the very same problem, which made me chuckle a little every time the problem was brought up. But overall, eh. It was fine. Sort of weird, not in that this issue exists, but in that so much time and word space was devoted to it. But fine and it didn't ruin the book for me by any stretch.

END OF SPOILERS

So, yeah, basically you already know if you're buying Blood Mirror or not. If you've read the previous three, you're buying it. I'll just add that you don't have to worry about Wheel of Time levels of filler here. Stuff actually happens. There is also no absolutely egregious cliffhanger (ala Dance of Dragons/Walking Dead). And the next book, book 5, has a BUNCH of cool stuff set up to happen. So. Nothing to worry about. Yet. But if a Book 6 is ever announced, yeah. Ima be worried.

Otherwise, my fellow fantasy chums, we all of us settle back in for the long wait. Doors of Stone, Winds of Winter, Stormlight 3, etc, etc, and now another Lightbringer book. So. Here's to hoping the end next promised us is actually that: an end.

Too much filler and not enough moving of the plot
By A.K.
This book just isn't as good as the others. There's a ton of filler that doesn't further the plot. Seriously didn't need an entire segment of the book dedicated to bedroom problems. I read fantasy books to escape reality for a little bit and the filler was just painful.

Unfortunate.
By William Hardy
First three books were great, interesting characters and plenty of action. This one is a bit of a slog. It feels lacking direction and there are many, many paragraphs that are just a waste. Chapters are short, and you switch characters every single chapter- it's hard to even find your bearing sometimes. We might be at the infamous downturn of a great series. Unfortunate, I really liked the premise.

Preface

Numerous times we've been asked when the next book in the How to Break... series will come out and what it's going to be about. The overwhelming request from our readers has been on the subject of Web applications. It seems many testers find they are working in this area and are facing the prospect of testing applications that employ applications' specialized protocols and languages that exist on the World Wide Web.

Although many of the tests from How to Break Software (Addison-Wesley, 2002) and How to Break Software Security (Addison-Wesley, 2003) are relevant in this environment, applications hosted on the Internet do suffer from some unique problems. This book tackles those problems in the same spirit of its predecessors with a decided slant toward security issues in Web applications.

Before we go into what this book is all about, first let us tell you what it isn't all about. We are not trying to rewrite the Hacking Exposed books. Although there is an overlap of subject matter with the hacking literature, our intention is not to show how to exploit a Web server or Web application. Our focus is about how to test Web applications for common failures that can lead to such exploitation.

How to Break Web Software is a book written for software developers, testers, managers, and quality assurance professionals to help put the hackers out of business.

This focus necessarily means knowledge of hacker techniques is included in this book. After all, one needs to understand the techniques of their adversary in order to counter them. But, this book is about testing, not about exploitation. Our focus is to guide testers toward areas of the application that are prone to problems and methods of rooting them out.

This book isn't about creating a correct Web application architecture, nor is it about coding Web applications. There are other published opinions on this and each Web development platform has its own unique challenges that must be considered, which books like Innocent Code do so well. How to Break Web Software, however, does contain a lot of information about how not to architect and code a Web application. Thus, Web developers would be wise to consider it as part of their reference library on secure Web programming.

What this book is about is pointing the tester toward specific attacks to try on their application to test its defenses. We will be looking at classic examples of malicious input, ways of bypassing validation and authorization checks, as well as problems inherited from certain configurations/languages/architectures—all in a simple format that will show where to look for the problem, how to test for the problem, and advice on methods of mitigation. How to Break Web Software is intended as a one-stop shop for people to dip into to get information (and inspiration) to test web-based applications for common problems.

Happy Web testing!

One of the best on the topic!
By Charles Hornat - www.infosecwriters.com
This is a hard topic to find good reading. Most books are usually targeted towards operating systems or malware specifically. However, from the first page, I knew this was something worthwhile. A key part to this book being so good is the format Mike and James use to present each topic thus providing something for attackers and security folks. It also could provide pen testers and auditors some good ammo to use as well.

The layout of the chapters starts with gathering information on targets. Then takes a step towards client side attacks, server side attacks, Language based attacks, Authentication, Privacy, and Web Services. They even throw in a chapter outlining the last 50 years or so of web software defects. Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, we have not always learned from our mistakes.

The best part of the book however, is not the topic as much as it is the layout they use to demonstrate every vulnerability. They start with a topic, Buffer Overflows as an example. The authors describe what it is in a few paragraphs, then discuss when to apply this type of attack, then proceed in How to conduct this attack, and end with How to protect oneself from this attack. Each section is no more than a few paragraphs, ensuring that you do not loose focus on what's being discussed.

The authors also do a great job discussing the tools that one can use to test or perform each attack. Tools such as Nikto, Wikto, Paros and SSL Digger are discussed. When additional information is needed, they provide screenshots and output for one to learn from.

This book is a must for anyone in the role of Web Security, Auditing, or pen testing.

Pros

Good Tools, Excellent format, Easy to read

Cons

Perhaps more references for more information since the authors do not go into great detail; Advanced web security people may find it a bit elementary

Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read
By Jim Anderton
I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.

The book covers common exploits such as bypassing input validation, SQL injection, and denial of service. There were also several types of attacks I hadn't really considered before. I won't list them here because someone would undoubtedly say, "I can't believe he didn't know about that one!" The authors cover 24 different types of attacks in all. The book also includes coverage of web privacy issues and security related to web services.

Finally, as icing on the cake, a CD is included that contains many tools that will find permanent spots in your arsenal. There are tools to do things like scan web servers for common exploits, mirror sites for local analysis, and check SSL cipher strengths. My favorites are the local proxies that will allow you to view and modify posts as they travel from the client and the server. I always knew I could do this, but didn't know how easy it is. The CD also contains the source code of an example site that includes many flaws for you to practice.

This book is written for software professionals to help them put the hackers out of business. So, it necessarily includes hacker techniques. If you develop or test web software, you should read this book before the hackers do. :-)

Short on content with too much padding
By Groovymarlin
I was disappointed in this book. The actual content was pretty thin, and not very well written. Chapter 1 is a complete waste of time, and actually spends pages explaining what client/server means, what the Web is, and other things that are patently obvious to the supposed audience for this material. I found myself turning to the front to see if this book was written in 1997! You then get nine fairly short chapters with instructions on how to hack a website, more or less; followed by 50 pages of useless padding in the appendices including: an unrelated article co-authored by Whittaker for the IEEE, a detailed list of all the bugs present in their "sample application," and then descriptions of their recommended tools, all of which can easily be found on the Web without paying $22 for this book.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are many typos and other problems like incorrect illustrations, making the reader wonder if Addison-Wesley even employs a copy editor. Furthermore, I felt this book was inaccurately named and described. It's really more about rudimentary hacking and protecting your web application against hackers than web quality or web testing. A beginning web developer might do well to read this as a primer on how to create sites and applications with basic security, but as an experienced tester it was of limited use to me.

Art Since 1900: 1900 to 1944 (Second Edition) (Vol. 1), by Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, David Jos

Five of the most influential and provocative art historians of our time have come together to provide a comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries―the most important chronicle of modern art for a generation.

The authors of Art Since 1900 adopt a unique, year-by-year structure in which they present more than one hundred and twenty short essays, each focusing on crucial events and the creation of a seminal work, the publication of an artistic manifesto, or the opening of a major exhibition that tell the story of the dazzling diversity of practice and interpretation that characterizes art of this period. Each turning point and breakthrough of modernism and postmodernism is explored in depth, as are the frequent anti-modernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. Art Since 1900 introduces students to the key theoretical approaches to modern and contemporary art in a way that enables them to comprehend the many “voices” of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. 233 full-color and 188 black-and-white illustrations

Mesocosm: Hinduism and the Organization of a Traditional Newar City in Nepal, by Robert I. Levy

Mesocosm is a study of Hinduism in its most fully realized form as a symbolic system for organizing the life of a particular kind of city—what the author terms an "archaic" city. The work is a detailed description and analysis of the symbolic world of Bhaktapur, a unicultural city in the Kathmandu Valley, a city which is perhaps the last surviving example of a type of organization once widespread in the ancient world.

Robert Levy views Bhaktapur as a structured "mesocosm," mediating between the microcosm of individual self-conception and the macrocosm of the culturally conceived larger universe. The city is a bounded entity, grounded on a minutely divided and interrelated sacrilized space. It uses that space, roles assigned by an elaborate caste system, a semantically differentiated pantheon, and the tempos and forms of the festival year and rites of passage to construct a "civic dance," a web of communication and instruction which deeply affects the experience of Bhaktapur's citizens. Levy investigates the meaning of the community to the people who live there and suggests how the religious forms that have challenged Hinduism in South Asia—Christianity and, above all, Islam—are profoundly antithetical to Hinduism as the organizing principle for cities such as Bhaktapur. Mesocosm is a groundbreaking contribution to anthropology, social and religious history, and Indian and Nepalese studies.

From the Inside Flap
"A first-rate anthropological study of Hinduism. . . . The scholarship is clearly of superior quality. There is no study with the [same] kind of comprehensive breadth and treatment.Robert Levy and Kedar Rajopadhyaya show us how to do anthropology at this time in our history."—Triloki N. Pandey, University of California, Santa Cruz

"I have no doubt that Mesocosm will become a classic in South Asian anthropology and Indology—leaving aside its implications for our understanding of other traditional cities in ancient European and Middle Eastern as well as more recent Oriental civilizations. . . . A very welcome and clear ordering of the very detailed and complex material."—Michael Witzel, Harvard University
