The Bayesian approach is particularly effective at modeling large datasets including spatial and temporal information due to its flexibility and ease with which it can formally include correlation and hierarchical structures in the data. However, classical simulation methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo can become computationally unfeasible; this book presents the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA) approach as a computationally effective and extremely powerful alternative.

Spatial and Spatio-temporal Bayesian Models with R-INLA introduces the basic paradigms of the Bayesian approach and describes the associated computational issues. Detailing the theory behind the INLA approach and the R-INLA package, it focuses on spatial and spatio-temporal modeling for area and point-referenced data.

This text probably turned me Bayesian

I had pre-ordered this text back in the Fall of 2014 and it arrived once it was released early June 2015. I very much recommend this book and method. I have a background in statistics and I currently work in a business area where the Bayesian approach is rarely considered as a possible solution. This is mainly due to computational complexity with larger datasets. The INLA method has been a real "game-changer" for us and now are very much considering approaches we had not thought as realistically possible. For those unfamiliar, the Integrated Nested Laplace
Approximation (INLA) is a deterministic algorithm that avoids much of the computational burden that simulated methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods use.

Since I have almost exclusively worked with the frequentist approach, I appreciated that this book went into detail describing the methods and interpretation behind Bayesian statistics. The book does a nice job of describing the theory, but then balancing the theory with simple examples using R code that walks you step by step through the various algorithms in the book. The INLA algorithms seem to be implemented in lower-level languages for efficiency purposes (I am guessing C), but the book does an outstanding job of stepping outside of the complexity and creating step by step R code that describes the various algorithms. I wish more texts employed this teaching technique!

While the R-INLA website has very good examples and tutorials on their website, I did not feel that I fully understood the INLA method until reading this book. For those of us that are years removed from academia, it can be hard to "jump" into a formal statistical journal article and
understand the technique. This book has allowed me to know the method well enough in order to spread the technique to others in my organization. Again, thanks to the authors of the text as well as the excellent work by the INLA team.

The authors have done an excellent job. The book does not teach only theory, but balance quite detail theory with real practical examples that put the theory in perspective. The book is extremely good for those interested in applying Bayesian approach to a large data set.

Christopher Kenworthy worked as a writer, director, and producer for fourteen years. He directed a feature film, along with many music videos and commercial projects. Currently he is focused on writ-ing. Christopher is the author of the best-selling Master Shots Vol. 1, Master Shots Vol. 2, and Master Shots Vol. 3: The Director s Vision. Very cool and smart dissection of Tarantino's style and influence

I had a terrific time with this book. As someone who has watched all of Quentin Tarantino’s films – and had varying reactions to all of them – I found this book both educational and extremely enlightening. Given Tarantino’s undeniable impact upon the film culture of the early 90’s and his subsequent (some would say unshakeable) influence ever since, this book is proof – if any was needed – of just how deeply Mr. Tarantino’s cinematic DNA has been embedded in the popular moviegoing world.

The author, Christopher Kenworthy, has clearly done his homework. He not only understands the complex emotional effect that Tarantino’s films elicit – often, it’s a cocktail of giddy, amoral violence and deeply messed-up humor, all polished off with a self-conscious movie nerd’s sheen and surf rock or 70’s soul on the soundtrack – but just how those sensations manifest themselves through his cinema. Breaking down, moment-by-moment, shot-by-shot, some of the most memorable and gruesome scenes from “Reservoir Dogs” and “Django Unchained” should be required homework for anyone looking to study Q.T.

Kenworthy examines the building of tension that comes with some of Tarantino’s most shocking and violent scenes. Since Q.T. is one of the most recognizable writers of dialogue working in movies today, he is able to play the audience like a puppet, knowing exactly when the brutality should strike. Kenworthy understands this, and he’s able to do much the same to his reader through mastery of his craft and knowledge of his subject.

It’s also interesting to note the stylistic differences that permeate all of the director’s films: the camera movements and general style of something like “Jackie Brown” is markedly different then the more frenzied, overtly cinematic approach of the “Kill Bill” films or “Django Unchained”. Kenworthy drives these points home with tremendous insight and he makes us see the picture crystal clear. His economy as a writer turns out to be his biggest asset.

Overall, highly recommended. This book made me see Tarantino’s films in an entirely new light. One can only hope Kenworthy covers more directors with more great books like this one.

A Celebration of Tarantino's Craft

Author Christopher Kenworthy tells us that “Tarantino is famous for many reasons, but he is underrated as a technical filmmaker” within the introduction to this very important book about film directing. And this is true, so many of us admire Tarantino for his gritty, realistic stories that are often produced as homages to classic films within various genres, that we forget that he is also a nearly flawless film director. If you are at all interested in Tarantino as an artist, and most definitely as one of America’s finest film auteurs, then this book is for you. You don’t have to be a student director to enjoy this book, although many students who are studying directing can definitely learn a lot from this volume. This is a must-read for Tarantino fans and film students alike. You will assuredly know how Tarantino sets up his scenes and executes his vision by the end of this book. I’m not a film director but I do enjoy his movies and I am now going to enjoy his movies even more after reading this book.

About the Author
Joseph Stein (1912-2010) was an playwright best known for such musicals as Fiddler on the Roof and Zorba. Born to Jewish immigrants, Stein grew up in the Bronx. He began his career as a psychiatric social worker, while writing comedy on the side. A chance encounter with Zero Mostel led him to writing for radio personalities, including Hildegarde and Jackie Gleason. He later worked in TV when he joined the writing team of "Your Show of Shows," which included Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, and Carl Reiner. He was honored with the Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theater, and in 2008 was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.

Shalom Aleichem

Shalom Aleichem was for modern Jewish literature what Mark Twain was for American literature. In one for instance, Aleichem like Twain was the writer's own appropriation. Mark Twain originally was a sounding phrase used by riverboat operators. Shalom Aleichem -- also a sounding phrase -- is used in Jewish communities to welcome eachother and in congregation the bride of the sabbath itself. Both Twain and Aleichem created indelible unforgettable stories with indelible unforgettable characters...like Tevye. And whether you found Tevye through Topol, Mostel or Shalom Aleichem's turn of the century stories themselves, you saw not only a mirror held to the Jewish Everyman but a template for the better inside us all. I like to think that Shalom Aleichem, who died in 1916 would have gladly approved of the appropriation of his character Tevye in this wonderful celebration of life. In my opinion what makes this particular story such a great celebration of life is not that it shrinks from depicting life's sometimes harsh realities, but rather one's ability to overcome them through faith, family and a recognition of the inherent beauty of life. After seeing Tevye in action, his simple eloquence, his love for his family, his courage, his humanness, you can't rightly help yourself from feeling a shared sense of appreciation for life.

Wonderful story of history, traditions and values.

I loved reading Fiddler on the Roof because of how the characters came alive in my mind. Several of the characters' actions and personalities reminded me of my family members. The theme is univeral: How do parents instill their traditions and values in their children in an constantly changing world? The protagonist, Tevye, tries to instill in his daughters his values and traditions in an increasinly violent world. As the world becomes more modernized and industrial, Tevye and the villagers start to lose some of their traditions. The story is the epitome of the Jewish struggle and persecution they have faced throughout history. Fiddler on the Roof is a must read for the young and old for its lessons about life are profound.

Donor Agencies are so smart after all!

Those dealing with knowledge management in donor agencies should read this book and keep it on their bookshelves. Many others in donor agencies, their government oversight bodies, and their client organizations will find it interesting. The book covers the bilateral donor agencies of the UK, Sweden and Japan, and the World Bank. It assesses the discussions of knowledge in selected policy documents of those agencies, their efforts to improve internal knowledge, their evaluation practices, their ICT-based knowledge management systems, etc. I have been involved in some of the efforts the describe, and their selection seems reasonable. The coverage is primarily focused on the 1990's, and the late 1990's were a time of rapid change in their knowledge systems. King and McGrath have read a great deal, and have interviewed a very large number of people within the agencies they study. Their work has both the advantages and disadvantages of their being academics outside of the organizations they study. They note differences among the bilateral donor agencies, marking the contingency of knowledge processes: thus Japanese aid is influenced by its experience as a recipient of foreign aid as well as a long-time donor, and by the concept of wakon yosai (Japanese spirit, Western technology) which helped guide technology transfer in Japan since the Meiji period; Sweden has maintained more interest in higher education and in science and technology than other donors. They conclude that "the knowledge revolution in agencies remains largely a series of uncoordinated projects that are being implemented without any real overall vision or strategy." (As perhaps it should be.) They do not answer the critical question as to whether the costs of the efforts to improve knowledge systems in development assistance have been justified by improvement of the efficiency or effectiveness of such assistance, but I suspect that question is unanswerable. King and McGrath do illuminate what has been happening, summarizing a great deal of information, and I found the book stimulating. [...]

Dwight McNeill, Ph.D., MPH, is a Lecturer at Suffolk University Sawyer Business School, where he teaches population health and health policy. He is President of WayPoint Health Analytics, which provides guidance to organizations on the analytics of population health management, behavior change, and innovation diffusion. He is the author of A Framework for Applying Analytics in Healthcare: What Can Be Learned from the Best Practices in Retail, Banking, Politics, and Sports (FT Press 2013) and numerous journal articles including “The Value of Building Sustainable Health Care Systems: Capturing the Benefits of Health Plan Transformation” (Health Affairs).

 

Over his thirty year career in healthcare, he has held analytics positions in corporations at IBM and GTE; governments at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; analytics companies; and provider settings.

Informative &interesting

Even if you don't collect stones as I do, or aren't interested in planets and the zodiac...maybe you are fascinated by chakras and how to bring your thoughts and body into well-being. This book is visually attractive with individual pictures of stones and quartz in amazing color. It will tell you mental, spiritual, emotional and physical uses of each stone. It lists affirmations, chakra, astro and planet of each stone. This is a substantial 400 plus page workbook for novice and teacher alike. It has become my go-to book for info regarding stones. Not a disappointment and a should-buy.

The pictures are all in full color and the two page guide to each of the 190 specimens contains all of the information you'll realistically need to know about each stone. You'll learn about the color, chakra, planet, number, element, mohs scale, astrological sign, affirmation, spiritual use, mental use, emotional use, physical use, divine guidance, and general information about each stone.

You will also learn about how to choose your crystals, what the shapes and sizes mean of the stones, how to clean and charge your crystals, which gemstones work best for each chakra, how to use the stones in your home, and much more.

I absolutely love this book and have been using it almost daily since I received it. It is the perfect reference book and I have honestly learned so much from it. I highly recommend it.

A book that has haunted me for years!!

I am so excited to have found this book! I am 21 years old and my mother read this book to me once long ago when I was little. It has haunted me ever since that time over the years and I have wanted to find it again. I only was able to hear the story once and never again because my Mom bought it for children at a powwow and gave it to them. I am so glad I will have it again. I plan to read it once more and than give it to children at the school I'm teaching at so they can enjoy it, too. A great message and a lovely story! I would recommend it for girls between 4-10 years of age.

Although the retelling of story is not be perfectly authentic, the story flows well and and the illustrations are of good quality. It does contain some culturally accurate information and would be an excellent addition to a tasteful collecter's children's library.

I loved this bok!
I thought it was a very good story and very cleaver. I liked the deepth of it and meaning. I would buy this book! It has great illlustrations and it is my favorite fairy tale/ picture book! I'm going to buy it! Even though I am almost 12 I still enjoy this book very much!
