Better than expected!

I ordered this book as a hobby figuring that the 200+ pages must have some decent methods to improve my drawing skills. I have been looking for a fashion design instruction book for a long time now. This is certainly an elusive topic to find information on -- even on the web I couldn't find any website that offered any helpful instructions. I have never been able to find anything suitable, especially since I didn't want to invest a lot. This book was a good price that I didn't think would be too much of a loss if I didn't find it useful.

I was thrilled when I received it and immediately opened the book to find everything I had always hoped for. Being that I have no formal art or fashion training, I thought this book was exceptional. It has tons of pages of basic fashion design drawing concepts, templates, body positions. There are so many samples that, with practice, any beginner can really get a good grip on. It's a very good basic introduction to fashion design. Also, for beginners, it's got some pretty good instructions and examples of drawing all parts of the body (head, eyes, mouth, arm, leg, feet, hands, etc).

If you think you might be interested in this area of drawing, get this book! You can't beat the quality for the price. In my opinion, a rare gem!

Excellent Book!

I am very picky about fashion illustration books. My two favorites are written by Kathryn Hagen. Figure Drawing for Fashion Design is my third favorite. The illustrations are very well done. I don't like the way the artist interprets faces and some of the drawings are a bit on the crude side, but overall, the drawings and instructions are very good. The women seem rather masculine, but the proportions are accurate and it is easy to make simple modifications to create more attractive faces with less angular features. I think, perhaps they are angular to emphasize the underlying structure. From what I can tell, most of the faces are the same. White women with high cheek bones and huge lips. I get the feeling there were a few illustrators who contributed to this book, because some of the illustrations are quite fluid and beautiful, while others are lacking. I attended FIDM, and most of what I learned came from my own determination, common sense, and observation of photos in fashion magazines rather than any book that was provided (which, by the way were completely unacceptable!). Had this been our text, I think my (we) did. Although I am fairly good at fashion illustration, there is lots of information that I found useful, and I think this book is an excellent reference for designers at any level of experience. I don't do much fashion illustrations these days as I spend most of my time making custom corsets, but if i did, I would certainly make use of this book. It's far less expensive than Hagen's books, and I like it much more than 9 Heads, which I never cared for. The colored illustrations are ugly (too gaudy and rock star-ish) to me, I must admit, but for someone who isn't really great at rendering fabrics or needs some quick, well proportioned croquis, this book will be very helpful. There are many different models, all shown in various, and even dynamic poses.There are some lovely hands from all different angles, and great examples of all types of foot wear, also from many angles. Those are the sections I found most useful. The section on flats is comprehensive and shows a great deal of detailing including top stitching with various silhouettes. Excellent instruction on how to place a garment on the body, and how to make the fabric look real and drape properly. There is a copy of a production schedule, croguis for flats from different angles (most books have only front and back). It shows how to build a fashion figure from scratch, starting with a stick frame, adding cylinders, then fleshing out the curves, once again, from many different angles, which is not very common in most books of this nature. I would very highly reccomend this book, even if you have only a slight interest or one time need for a fashion illustration reference. Even the less attractive drawings are useful. It's less than $20. Most books of this quality are closer to $100. I wish I had more books like this, and at such a low price, I almost felt like I had stolen something!

The book features a plethora of examples to teach how to draw faces and poses in correct proportion, as seen in professional fashion illustrations. The examples in the book are large, facilitating the use of tracings prior to free-hand drawing. Anyone who wants to learn fashion design, especially teenagers interested in the field, will find this book an invaluable asset.

Soup and Me

I like the book I'm reading because it is kind of a comady. It is about two friends who have grown up together. Theres a girl in the book that always picks on them and they try to get back at her. They play tricks on her. Then Soup starts liking a girl and Rob doesn't like that with some times they fight. In one part of the book witch I thought was funny. They try to save money to buy some gum so Soup gives Rob a hair cut. With doesn't turn out to well. But I realy like this book.
The boys realy have some funny things happen to them. They decide to take a swim in April and of course the water is freezing. A girl comes and takes there clothes and throughs them into the pond.So they have to run through the town naked. They come to a church and they find some clothes but they are all girl clothes. They build this car from stuff they found at the dump. They have all different tips of tires. They take it for a test drive and they crash into the ditch. Rob's mom gives him a Quarter for a hair cut. But the wont to get some bubble gum. So Soup gives Rob a hair cut.

Harry Potter Who?

Peck's Soup series puts Harry Potter and anyone who reads them to shame, shame on you! The Soups are smart, funny and relevant to anyone who enjoys a quick read.
It's a shame Soup & Me and the other Soups are out of print. These books will remind you of Huck Finn; they're about clever, rural boys with cool names and the writing's just as good, but funnier.
I recommend the Soups to everybody, including Rosie O'Donnell and my nay-saying girlfriend. Most of all, I wish all pre-teen boys could read the Soups -- to actually read something that can be considered fine writing, and to learn how to construct a corn cob pipe in a Vermont corn field.

Loved it as a kid, love it now as an adult

I loved the Soup books when I was a kid. They are funny, easy to read and great to listen to. I found a used paperback last year and reread it. Sometimes books don't really hold up as I look at them again with older eyes, but this one sure does!

About the Author
Robert Carver worked in the City of London for over a decade. He initially traded exotic derivative products for Barclays investment bank and then worked as a portfolio manager for AHL - one of the world's largest systematic hedge funds - before, during and after the global financial meltdown of 2008. He was responsible for the creation of AHL's fundamental global macro strategy and then managed the fund's multi-billion dollar fixed income portfolio before retiring from the industry in 2013. Robert, who has bachelors and masters degrees in Economics, now systematically trades his own portfolios of futures and equities.

Substance over Style

I have just finished reading this book for a second time. If you subscribe to the notion that money management is the most important part of any trading system ... this one is for you. This book does an excellent job of laying out a compartmentalized approach to building a systematic money management overlay for a quantitative trading system. In full disclosure, this book is not an easy read by any means but the substantive content is excellent.

If you are a novice to trading and investing then this book probably isn't the first, second, or even tenth book you should read on trading. However, if you are experienced trader looking for some fresh approaches to logically evaluating and developing a systematic approach to trading then you may find this one worth your time. For example, there are a few books and plenty of information on the internet regarding fixed fractional position sizing methods. However, this book is the most detailed manuscript that I have come across in regards to constructing a trading system based on a volatility targeting position sizing method. If you liked Following The Trend by Andreas Clenow and Trend Following With Managed Futures by Greyserman and Kaminiski then you will probably like this book. The writing style is more in-line with the latter than the former.

This book is by no means an easy read and has an academic text feel at times, but I am giving it 5 stars based on the substantive content, the look-behind-the-curtain perspective that the author provides to institutional trading, and the overall value of information provided for the price paid. I also agree with the other reviews that the author's website is a nice bonus.

One of the best trading books of all time

Absolutely the best book I've read to date. I've gone through it 3-4 times now and I'm still uncovering new ideas and information. I'm not sure how anyone could call it simple, as I'm pretty sure most people would have trouble coding this up properly. Luckily, Robert has code examples and even just released the beginnings on a full system framework on his site that includes the very system in the book. Not having binary(in or out) entries and exits was definitely eye opening, in addition to combining multiple signals to get a forecast and using account volatility to aid in position sizing. It's the perfect book for everyone who has done some research and started their foray into quant trading but doesn't know where to go next and wants to know what level the big guys are playing at. I can't recommend it enough.

Oh, and to the guy who says there is no good info or rules. I'm pretty sure he gives you a FULL system in the book that is at least a bit similar(if not very) to something they were or are trading at AHL, one of the largest and most successful hedgefunds of all time. Can lead a horse to water I guess...

In-depth Review of Rule-Based Non-Emotional Trading Methods

The book is best suited to self-directed traders/investors and individuals who are mathematically inclined and who are looking for a systematic rule-based methodology to manage their money while eliminating the emotional component of the equation. The author provides methods for three trader types: asset-allocators, semi-automatic traders comfortable with leverage and derivatives, and staunch systems traders using trading rules. Readers need to understand that they need to have adequate time available to develop and then back-test a rule-based approach. This book provides everything needed to develop a sound trading approach.

Over the course of 300 pages, Carver divides the text into four-parts consisting of detailed explanations of how to set up a systematic trading system covering first the theory behind it, then how to use the toolbox safely, followed by the specific framework to use, and lastly the practice needed to make it work effectively.

As the author illustrates, developing a profitable trading system is not a simple task that can be completed in a couple of hours. It is a time-consuming learning process containing critical elements that must be weaved together, tested, and then tried out in real-time. It is not for the faint of heart or those that give up easily because of the time commitment. Above all, it is necessary to spend the time to develop an objective trading system that will work well going forward, not just back-test very well.

Carver believes that one of the keys to making money in the markets is to avoid mistakes such as making your trading system to complex, being overly optimistic concerning likely returns, taking unnecessary risks, and trading too frequently.

Most of the chapters begin with a short summary, then use examples, charts, tables, and explanations to bring home the key points. All the key components and concepts of developing a systematic trading system are explored including: trading rule development, position sizing, forecasting, risk management, Sharpe ratios, skew, standard deviation, volatility, back-testing and over-fitting, asset allocation, correlation, curve fitting, and much more. Additionally, there is an appendix that contains useful resources – books and data sources, as well as a nine-page glossary of terms. Readers can also download a complimentary copy of the eBook edition.

Individuals who are serious about developing a personalized systematic trading approach will find this book to be a complete guide to the subject matter with unique insights of the author. He was previously a portfolio manager for a large systematic-oriented hedge fund, who now trades his own money in the futures and equities markets.

A textbook on the firm.

This book is probably the first textbook on economics of organization. Since published in 1992, it has been widely used in classes. The main framework of the book lies in the conception of the firm as a system of incentive/coordination to allocate efficiently resources. So this book is an extension of neoclassical approach to the area of organization, though such concepts like bounded rationality and transaction cost are incorporated deeply into the architecture of the book. Unlike usual textbooks, this book has the overarching coherence with theoretical depth over various subjects like centralized/decentralized organization, moral hazard, rent, ownership, human resource management, investment, corporate governance. Such consistency is possible for its theoretical position: neoclassical approach. In that stance, the actor is motivated in its rational calculation, in other word incentive, although it¡¯s bounded in terms of information. How to organize such actor into an organization is the problem of coordination in the theory of the firm. Such an approach was widely adopted in the 1980s. But these days, resources/capabilities approach and evolutionary economics dominate the discourse on the firm. Capabilities, resources, dynamic capabilities, organizational learning, routine, tacit knowledge, knowledge creation, those are buzzwords to date. If you are to be specialized in the theory of the firm, this book should be read. But if not, I recommend Besanko, Dranove, and Shanley¡¯s ¡®Economics of Strategy¡¯. It takes trendy approach and that, it explains each subject with live examples from business world.

Great book; the worst print quality you'll ever see

The book delivered by Amazon.com looks like a photocopied book, not a printed one. Paper quality is the worst. It's totally incompatible with the US$ 140 price.

It should be out-of-print or something and then Prentice-Hall found it cheaper to photocopy and bind it, rather then issuing a new edition. Amazon.com should let customers know this in advance.

The book content is great as the other reviewers have said, but I'm about to see a book with worse print quality than the one Amazon sent me.

I wish I have bought a used book, printed 15 years ago, for US$ 40.

Interesting and still relevant text on business economics

Paul Milgrom and John Roberts are big name professors at Stanford. You know they are big name because on the cover of the book their names are bigger than the title. That's sort of the definition, right?

Seriously, this is a very fine book. Even though it is a dozen years old and much has happened in the theories of organization, compensation, and incentives, the information in this book remains valuable. The book has 17 chapters organized in 7 parts. They are:

1)Does Organization Matter

2)Coordination: Markets and Management

3)Motivation: Contracts, Information, and Incentives

4)Efficient Incentives: Contracts and Ownership

5)Employment: Contracts, Compensation, and Careers

6)Finance: Investments, Capital Structure, and Corporate Control

7)The Design and Dynamics of Organization

I think that presenting these business topics as topics in economics is very helpful in developing the right habits of thinking. While the book is not heavy in mathematics, it does present the relevant formulas and does not shy away from serious discussions of economics. In this way it is a very practical and applied text.

While this book has been and should continue to be used in classes, I hope it gets a larger audience in the general readership interested in business and economics. It really is that interesting and well written.
