Be Careful Juicing Certain Vegis and Fruits

The book is very good in that it tells about the origins of the fruits and vegis you are juicing and has lots of recipes. It doesn't tell you how much you should drink to begin with. I juiced 1 large beet and became very sick from it - to the point I almost went to the ER. I later found other people on the internet who had the same experience that I did. The only thing this book said about beets was that it could irritate the throat. That was an understatement. Some vegis and fruits are toxic in large quantities or if your body is not use to them. I even found one website that was titled, "Respect the Beet." I had no idea a vegi could make you that sick. Apparently some vegis have acids in them that become super concentrated when juiced and raw. This book should have warned me of that. If you buy this book be careful to start off with small glasses until your system gets use to the raw juice.

USE IT!!!

Great study guide. Highly recommend! I just passed my CLEP on American History 2 (1865 - present). I studied Newman's "United States History" and after I was finished I went over review questions in this Study Guide. It really focuses attention to the events and situations CLEP requires you to know for this exam.

this guide is good. It is important to note that this is ...

I wish they sold this individually (thus cheaper) instead of a guide for all 33 exams. I only needed the one for American Government. Under than my little whine, this guide is good. It is important to note that this is just a guide. There's really nothing on this book except a breakdown of the exams and about 90 sample questions for each exams. You would need to buy other actual study materials.

The sample questions are worth their weigh in gold though. I took it right before actually studying for the exam and it is helping me figure out what is important and what is not while I am reading/studying the actual study material.

About the Author

Miles Van Pelt (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Belcher Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as Academic Dean. Miles lives in Madison, Mississippi, with his wife, Laurie, and their four children.

Gary D. Pratico (ThD, Harvard Divinity School) is senior professor of Old Testament and Hebrew language at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has been teaching Hebrew for more than thirty years and is coauthor with Miles V. Van Pelt of Basics of Basics of Biblical Hebrew (grammar and workbook) and The Vocabulary Guide to Biblical Hebrew.

A very handy guide

A great companion to the Basic's of Biblical Hebrew series. I used it to write class notes on. There is a DVD with it that also has the Charts. I still refer to it when I run into problem texts.

Very disappointing

I was pretty excited about getting this book, and expected it to be a pretty thorough resource. After all a book dedicated to BH charts should really be a pretty complete reference. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the authors really intended this book to be, but it lacks both focus and depth. The book is trying to cover paradigms for verbs, nouns, etc., but also explain basic grammatical principles. And in either case it's not doing a very thorough job. It looks like the authors ripped most of their charts and grammar principles from their Basics of Biblical Hebrew (BBH) book, I went to the library and did a brief comparison, and added very little beyond what's in that book. In fact their BBH textbook has additional summary tables of verbal paradigms that AREN'T in this book. For example in BBH, starting on p. 416 they have a nice summary of verbal paradigms, the kind that most folks are used to seeing in Weingreen, Ross, Seow, etc. (with a full inflection for all stems on a single page), which aren't included in this one. Not only would I have expected them to be included, but I also expected that the book would go well beyond it and have much more. For example, I would expect the book to include paradigms for some key doubly-weak verbs such as hyh, ytz), yr), r)h, etc.

There are quite a few "charts" in the book (over 100) and more on the CD (400+). Some of them are certainly useful and the content is certainly correct. The authors do have some interesting charts on verbs that you don't see in a typical grammar, but the fact that they have left out the standard charts just doesn't make sense. The book also covers basic syntactical rules which is nice, but it's pretty rudimentary and it certainly does not make up for other shortcomings. A number of the charts are so basic that they shouldn't even be called charts -- like a chart on syllabification, which covers only two rules and explains how do divide the word "davar" into syllables. And it takes the entire 8x10" page! The use of extremely large fonts (Hebrew letters of 1/2 inch size in some cases) is rather puzzling to me. There is a LOT of white and in my opinion wasted space on each page and for the most part, very little content. They could have used the space to print all the 400+ charts in the book, instead of including the CD. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this decision was, but it wasn't a good move. Basically, if I really want to browse all that the authors have put together, I have to either print the charts that aren't in the book from the CD or browse through the CD on my computer. Not very useful. If anything I would expect the CD to have charts for Biblical Aramaic or something extra that is beyond the scope of the book. Fat chance.

Because the book is printed on a large page format, I expected the pages to be packed with content. Instead it is missing much of what a reference book like this should undoubtedly contain. The print/font sizes are formatted for some seriously far-sided folks. Once again I am disappointed with the book and I would not recommend it to anyone serious enough or advanced enough who would be looking for and expecting it to be a complete and a comprehensive reference covering every imaginable verbal chart and beyond. Two stars are a stretch.

The charts are clear and in very large print, so in that way this is quite a nice book. However, this item seems to be more useful for the teaching of the material than for self-study outside of class.

Excellent Condition and Speedy Delivery, Great read too

So I completed this course last semester along with mother baby. I truly enjoyed reading this book. Psychologically, this book touches on the development of children in a way that I have never thought about prior to reading this book. It is a very informative text and I not only recommend it for nursing school, but for just an interesting read. So now on to the important stuff, does this book help you to pass the end of term HESI. Hm...I am not exactly sure, I didn't do that great on the HESI, but I did feel as though I learned a great deal from the course. Another thing, the instructor for the course had us skipping chapters and she picked and chose the content that she wanted us to read, which probably did more harm than good. Despite that, I did do well in the class overall, the content questions on EVOLVE truly help you to understand the text content.

Shae Armstrong is a pop-star princess who was found out on a whim, by chance and never looked back. She has been pushed by her mother, her ex-fiancé and Team Shae who depends on her stardom for their livelihood. She’s the exact opposite of a diva and is actually almost taken advantage of because she won’t speak up for herself. She wants to live for herself, to make her own decisions and follow her new interests.

Nick DeMarco is an extremely wealthy businessman and investor, as he describes himself. But most others believe the rumors of his alleged ties to the mob. He’s only had women who want to be with him for his sexual prowess and his money. He feels as though he is destined to not know a great love and spend the rest of his days alone or with meaningless female encounters.

Shae is unsure about Nick and wants to take their relationship slowly, to learn about each other, to go on dates and spend time together doing normal couple things. But Nick wants everything and wants it all right now. He wants to move at super-sonic speed. They have many issues, both personally and a professionally that they will have to work through.

I’m not a fan of insta-love because there is little to no relationship building that happens afterward. Nick was professing his love within days and wanted marriage within a week or two. And then he lamented that she deserved someone better the rest of the book and was willing to give her up for her own good. This got really old, especially when it happens at 90%. It really turned me off of the book.

I could not put this book down! Unpredictable and full of suspense, intrigue, drama and love. The characters were well thought out and I loved the his and hers point of view writing in the book. I felt the chemistry they had and overall really loved this book!

Pop princess meets mob boss, what could go wrong? Must read!!!

Shae Armstrong is a pop princess with a heart of gold. She has a few close friends whom she loves dearly and would do anything for them. She and her best friend, Carrie live in the house Shae bought for her mom who had recently passed away leaving her without any relatives. Shae had already made those closest her family and has known Carrie since kindergarten. Everything in her life has stayed consistent until one day at her best friend, Jason's gym.

Enter Nick DeMarco. He's joining a new gym and meeting with a new trainer. Nick has a questionable background. No one can deny his wealth or his role as dominant male. He is power. Questions surround not only his family but his life style as well. Is he part of the mob or isn't he? How dangerous can one man be?

They meet. You can feel the electricity flowing between them from the start. Shae is being harassed by a fellow gym member until Nick interferes and makes the man leave. He can't take his eyes off her and becomes consumed with getting her to accept a dinner date which leads to drinks at his place. Nick's desire to make her his continues to grow.

Even though most of the people around her try to get her to stay away from Nick, Shae can't deny how much she's drawn to him. He sees the real person behind the pop star and wants nothing but her. She gets pulled into Nick's dangerous world and the longer she stays with him the more dangerous it becomes for her. Nick desperately tries to shield Shae from his world but his enemies won't leave her alone.

This story has a lot of action and a lot of love. Even though Shae has trouble admitting her feelings, she can't let him go. The story of Nick and Shae makes the reader fall in love at the same time their hearts jump into their throat where you're praying everything will be okay. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in Nick and Shae's world. Nikki Belaire captured my heart and kept me at the edge of my seat throughout this book. Through the danger, the loss of friendship, the heart break of love, the addition of one and the betrayals Nikki Belaire kept me guessing as to what would happen next. It's a definite must read!

Shodo is Japanese calligraphy. It means, “the "Way of Brush Writing,"” and it'’s one of numerous Japanese arts ending in “Do,” indicating “the Way.” Nonetheless, how these arts function as Ways isn’'t always understood.

It’'s common to state that shodo is a Way of life (thus the designation “Do”), and that by practicing, we can transcend it and grasp the art of living. While this is true, it’'s uncommon to find a teacher (or book) that can explain how calligraphic art leads to spiritual realization. While some books pay lip service to the ideal of the Way producing spiritual evolution, they also sometimes fail to offer direct explanations and methodologies to help students realize the Way. It’'s frequently assumed that merely manipulating a brush will produce profound realizations.

This is untrue and unfortunate. It'’s untrue because it’'s the manner in which we approach the Ways that determines what we learn from them. Spiritual realization isn’t guaranteed.

It’'s unfortunate because the conscious practice of Japanese Do forms truly can result in the cultivation of mind and body. But to use shodo as meditation, we must investigate exactly how it can lead to realization.

Japanese calligraphy has been the subject of numerous books. Few of these works, however, have explored how it goes beyond art and enters into spirituality. Even fewer have offered methods to practice what can be thought of as “"brush meditation,”" and which are needed for personal growth to take place.

My book was written to answer that need, and I'm grateful for the kind reviews as well as the positive worldwide response.

Useful for Both Japanese Calligraphy and Meditation

I've been interested in Japanese painting and also brush writing for quite a few years. At the same time, I've also been fascinated by the idea of art as meditation. While I've read quite a few books that vaguely discuss how Japanese calligraphy is supposed to be "moving meditation," H. E. Davey's book is the first one I've read that clearly explains exactly how this takes place and how to start to use the brush in meditation.

Brush Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony not only deals with using Japanese calligraphy as a device with which to meditate, it does so in a manner that even people with no understanding of Japanese will be able to get something out of trying the exercises discussed. It seems to me, that you could apply the ideas in this book to most forms of art, and even in school, business, or family life, to arrive at a true understanding of calmness and personal harmony.

It's a useful book. I only wish it were longer. I hope the author comes out with a second, perhaps intermediate level, volume soon.

Shodo as it should be.

I recently finished reading the book, Brush Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind and Body Harmony, by H. E. Davey. The book is excellent. I am novice (hardly even that, actually) when it comes to Shodo (having only recently begun studying Shodo), but your book provides a very smooth introduction, and does a great job of getting across the relationship between it and the other Japanese cultural arts (chado [tea ceremony], budo [martial Ways], kado [flower arrangement], etc).
It is written in a very positive way and contains many beautiful pieces of artwork. I very much enjoyed the "four experiments toward a positive mind," these are great examples of introspection. Though I am far from an expert in budo, I have spent many years training and researching this topic, yet several of the explanations, provided for terms such as fudoshin, hara, and ki shed new light on these concepts, beyond just their relationship to Shodo.
Chapters three and four provide a very gentle introduction to the physical techniques while also providing an overview of the relationship between good posture and the proper state of mind. The importance of the coordination of mind, body, and spirit is presented in a way that should be easy for someone that is new to the Japanese cultural arts to grasp and understand.
I am again impressed with Davey sensei's ability to communicate a complex subject in an interesting and informative way that maintains the readers interest, while still capturing the subtleties of the topic.
From a beginner's perspective, this is an excellent reference, and I highly recommend it.

A Splendid Glimpse into the Art of Japanese Calligraphy

Strike with the katana, the Japanese long sword. Arrange a blossom in that brief interval after it's been cut, before it withers. Whisk a bowl of tea into a perfect froth. Seemingly disparate activities, yet each demands a similar sense of irrevocable action; absolute commitment; total coordination of mind and body. Once begun, none can be retracted. The consequences of each are obvious: a blunder is, if anything, more manifest than a flawless execution. In perhaps no other Japanese form of creative impulse is this concept of ichi-go, ichi-e--"one encounter, one chance"--more dramatic or obvious than when the calligrapher first touches an ink-wet brush to the dry expanse of white paper before him. Shodo, the Way of the Brush, exemplifies the spirit of Japanese art. In its potential for artistic expression contained within the rigid demands of form lies the challenge and the infinite reward of all the classical Ways of Japan.

From the budo (martial arts) to kado (or ikebana) to chado, the discipline of the tea ceremony, the range of these traditional Japanese Ways introduced to the West in the past half century has been extensive. Shodo, for the most part, remains an exception. The elegant art of the Japanese brush has, in large degree, been overlooked by Westerners in pursuit of the various Ways. Instruction outside Japan is limited. There are a few books on the subject; nearly all focussed on technical aspects of the art or else scholarly in direction, devoted to tracing the development of brush writing from its origins in China to its importation and evolution in Japan.

In pleasant contrast, H.E. Davey's new book, Brush Meditations: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony takes a unique approach in introducing shodo to the general public outside Japan. Quoting calligrapher Kobara Ranseki, who notes that "Every time I teach, I explain that art is balance," the author adopts a similar strategy in presenting shodo: a balanced one. The philosophical underpinnings of the craft are juxtaposed with practical advice on how to sit when practicing calligraphy, how to grasp the brush, what to look for in the shape and proper structure of the written character. Chapters are nicely balanced, with a history of ecriture in China and Japan, followed by an exploration of the mind-body connections pursued by the student of calligraphy. Then comes a chapter on the correct attitudes and habits of the calligrapher, and finally one featuring instructions for calligraphic compositions and projects. The result is a well-organized, comprehensive introduction to the Way of the brush, with a number of points to recommend it.

As one reads through the book, another, incidentally, from Stone Bridge Press which is rapidly gaining a reputation as a quality purveyor of books about Japan, some observations occur. Included in the closing chapter are directions for brushing an enso, for example, the smooth circle of ink that is a provenance and signature of the Zen adept. Despite the do-it-yourself enso, Zen's overall contributions to shodo are given a mercifully short shrift here. The over-emphasis on this sect of exoteric Buddhism in Western literature on all the Japanese Do has far eclipsed other equally important influences on them. On the other hand, a great deal is made in this book of the operation and importance of ki energies during shodo. This may irritate some readers impatient with the over-mystification of ki which has become practically a cottage industry among too many non-Japanese authors bent on draping Japan's artistic forms in impenetrable mysticism. In the author's defense, it must be noted that he is a no-nonsense pragmatist when it comes to ki. He is using the concept primarily as a way of explaining the control of energy, the conscious expression of spirit, the flow of intent from the mind of the calligrapher to the brush in his hand to the flowering of the character on paper.

Davey struggles a bit when he explains the actual mechanics of making the three basic strokes of brush calligraphy. That is understandable. The simplest basic of any Do is impossible to describe through words alone. These are techniques which, common to all the Ways, simply cannot be adequately explained in print, nor mastered unless one is directly under the tutelage of a teacher. This book introduces the skills and makes no claims to do more in that regard. As much as any "how-to" text, instructions for controlling the line and shape of written characters are clear, detailed, and sufficient to compel the reader to take out ink, brush, and paper, and to "give it a try." The book's usefulness and value, in addition to providing the technical basics of calligraphy, however, lies in the broader scope of rendering for the reader the process of undertaking shodo, or any of the Japanese artistic disciplines.

Brush Meditation addresses a number of concepts that should occupy the calligrapher as well as anyone with an interest in these Ways. His discussion of the spiritual component that elevates craft into art is informed and inspiring. He describes wonderfully the conflict between a natural spontaneity--which is the goal of anyone following a Do--and the vital adherence to a set form--which is vital to achieving that goal.

"If your mind is correct, the brush will be correct," the author reminds. The adage is equally valid contrapuntally. Beautiful calligraphy emanates from a correctly tuned mind. This is clearly Davey's motivation and intent for following in the path of the brush. His view of shodo is as a means of personal transformation and self-cultivation; his book is directed at sharing this perspective. Brush Meditation offers a splendid glimpse into the discipline of Japanese calligraphy as more than a purely artistic or communicative medium. It is an enjoyable read, one that educates as it stimulates the imagination, and is sure to be a welcome, quickly ink-stained addition to the library of those with a serious interest in the Ways of traditional Japan.
