Finding out who you really are

Who Am I? - The Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. Tiruvannamalai: T. N. Venkataraman, 1994. Paperback, 16 pages. No ISBN.

"Self-enquiry leads directly to Self-realization by removing the obstacles which make you think that the Self is not already realized." - Sri Ramana Maharshi.

This short pamphlet of just 16 pages which can be read in thirty minutes or so tells us all that we really need to know in order to set about finally understanding who we are. It begins by explaining that we aren't at all what we think we are - body, mind, and so on. It then goes on to describe a simple (though arduous) technique by means of which we can come to know who we really are.

My own edition contains a brief though very informative and well-written Introduction by T.M.P. Mahadevan. He explains that the book consists of a series of 28 questions asked by a young man who was undergoing a spiritual crisis and who visited the Maharshi seeking help; each question is then followed by the answer he was given.

The very first question he asked was "Who am I?" The rest of the book provides the answer, an answer that the Maharshi assures us will lead those tough enough to stay the course to liberation.

As simple as it gets

There are many, many books on nonduality out there, many of them quite extensive in breadth and depth. But the central tenet behind all of those words can be found in this tiny book: that the secret to life is to know oneself and to do that one must inquire of the self, again and again, "Who am I?" That's it, plain and simple. Beautiful in its simplicity, which of course is maddening to the mind, which always craves more.

Accessible, informative and well written guide to growing a GREAT community

Alex Kehr has written a book about community building that is neither Marketing top-heavy nor Business top-heavy. A great balance of common sense and unexpected instructions on how to grow not just a community, but an engaged and loyal community.

The narrative portions of the book are entertaining and, somehow, are also informative about the mindset and attitude needed to truly grow a committed community. The instructional portions of the book are clear, concise and, most importantly, actionable.

I read the whole book the day I got it. I am sure it will be something I will return to over and over as I grow my developer community.

Solid book on growth that is accessible for your whole team.

I highly recommend this book. If you have ever wanted to promote a site or product and thought, "I will just post a funny video and it will go viral", (1) Good luck, you probably won't get the results you hoped for (2) Get this book.

It is full of specific steps to get you customers, and then subsequently have those customers get you more customers. It is relatively short, but that is because it is direct and to-the-point.

If you are a company and want to get your team on the same page when it comes to marketing strategy, grab them each a copy.

A poorly written, unfocused and (generally) uninteresting effort

As a fan, I purchased this book over a year ago looking forward to an inside perspective and only just recently managed to finish it. The reason it took so long is certainly not the quantity of material (it's a very quick read start to finish) but rather how no part of the material really managed to keep my interest. Recently I decided to push through and finally made it to the end.

The writing style is very basic and most chapters hold very little narrative unity, often spilling over into rambling. My first thought was that this is understandable as, though I consider the skill involved in quality sports entertainment to be sublime, it certainly does not require one to also have a developed literary voice. But, upon reaching the acknowledgements section of the book, the author states that these stores were taken from oral interviews. To me, this meant two things: 1) We were robbed of the opportunity to hear these stories told directly from the source but were instead given rewritten versions by the author and 2) When they were rewritten, no effort (or no successful effort) was taken to effectively translate a spoken into a written narrative. Both of these, in my view, severely reduce the justification for this books existence much beyond it's initial conceptual appeal.

To speak to the positive side, this book is not without a few bits of rewarding insight and post match commentary from the participants themselves, as advertised. I particularly enjoyed the information about a performers state of mind going in to a particular confrontation (such as Shawn Michaels's nerves going in to Wrestlemania XXVI) which we, as fans, don't normally have access to.

Give it a shot if you'd like. My comments notwithstanding, you may still find something enjoyable to take away from it just, perhaps, not as much as you would have liked.

For my Non-reader who is WWE obsessed!

The tradition in our family for Easter is to fill the kids baskets with lots of books and art or stationary type stuff (markers, pencils, stickers, etc.) ...along with chocolate of course.
Our new foster son isn't much of a reader, but I didn't want to break from tradition, and I'm hoping he'll grow more fond of reading. Since he's obsessed with WWE I was hoping he would enjoy this book and another WWE reading book I found. When he saw the book he said it looked cool...now hopefully he'll read it!

This book is alright. I was hoping the wrestlers would go more in-depth with details of the matches (move sequences, etc.), back story, etc., but it was a lot of fluff. There is enough to make it interesting, and it's a short read, however. Decent, not great.

Aided by previously undisclosed correspondence, Grosskurth (Havelock Ellis, 1980, etc.; Humanities and Psychoanalytic Thought/Univ. of Toronto) takes the story of the brilliant, wildly neurotic men who contrived to safeguard Freudian thought and turns it into an intriguing psychological saga-cum-tragicomedy of manners. The Secret Committee, conceived in 1912 as a united front against the apostasy of Carl Jung and sealed by Freud's bestowal of antique intaglios, became, notes Grosskurth, ``a metaphor for the psychoanalytic movement itself...a cult of personality'' with Freud acting as both ``guru'' and distant, demanding father. Avidly submitting one another (and assorted romantic interests) to frequently scathing and self-justifying formal and informal analyses, Austrians Otto Rank and Hans Sachs, Hungarian Sandor Ferenczi, German Karl Abraham, and Welshman Ernest Jones, joined later by Russian-born German Max Eitingon, functioned as ``surrogate sons'' within a strikingly dysfunctional family--marked by sabotage, manipulation, and ``aggressively infantile'' jostling. Treating her story as a study of group pathology, Grosskurth uses pointed quotes to show how all of her subjects, especially Freud, used jargon as a cover for real feeling. Sadder still was the adored Freud's puzzling lack of support (he refused to be ``burdened'' by the ideas of others) and human empathy (e.g., failing to comprehend the sensitive Ferenczi's sorrow at his mother's death). Inevitably, as Freud predicted in Totem and Taboo, the anointed sons went their own ways, with, ironically, Freud's biological child, Anna, emerging as his staunchest defender. More emotionally involving, though less theoretically acute, than Janet Sayers's study of the overlapping generation of women psychoanalysts (Mothers of Psychoanalysis--reviewed next issue), the work suffers from a curious reticence. Grosskurth avoids some potentially interesting paths (e.g., Freud's gelid relationship with his own sons) and develops her conclusions so carefully that they become anticlimactic. Great Insight into Freud and his Circle

This book was exactly what I was looking for in my research into the formation and dissolution of Freud's inner circle. The book is written in clear language that will appeal to a broad range of readers. Interest in the subject matter is likely why I found it so valuable, however, readers with only passing interest could easily be drawn into the personalities and situations depicted in the book.

An Important Book About Freud and His "Secret Ring"

I have read this book a while ago, but now felt a need to give a review. Indeed, I did found it to be a fascinating reading, especially the correspondences between Freud and the members of the "Secret Committee." This book talks about the history of this secret committee, which was made to ensure the continuation of the existence of the psychoanalysis movement. This committee was initially consisted of Ernest Jones, Karl Abraham, Otto Rank, Hanns Sachs, Sandor Ferenczi, with Freud as its "ringleader" (Max Eitingon didn't joined until 1919).

I really find it interesting that it wasn't Freud's idea to form the "Committee." It was Ernest Jones' suggestion that "a secret committee be formed as a Praetorian guard around Freud" and the "unstated" aim was to monitor Carl Jung and to maintain a watching brief in which they would report to Freud but the main task was to "preserve the purity of psychoanalytic theory." This has occurred in late 1912 when there were "disagreements" between Jung and Freud. Of course, Freud was very enthusiastic about it and was intrigued by the "secret" aspect of this committee. Freud used his own theory as a "loyalty oath" of this committee and any "rejection of any part of the theory meant personal rejection of him" and "anyone whose ideas differed from his own, Freud described as an 'enemy.'" (51, 53).

Whoa, talk about a cult.

However, this committee didn't last for long because the members didn't "get along with each other." The author pointed out that the "fantasy had been dissolved by the harsh reality of human beings unable to get along together" (195). The "last" meeting to which Freud participated was in mid-1926 and a year later, that committee "converted" into a group of officials of the International Association.

Other thing that is of an extremely disturbing note from reading this book is the event surrounding the death of Pauline Silberstein, the wife of Eduard Silberstein, an early friend of Freud's in late 19th century and who Freud was trying to "control." It certainly made me think that Freud had something to do with her death.

Finally, this book, well-written by Phyllis Grosskurth, is an interesting reading about Freud's life and his "secret committee" and how they enforced the "continence" of the psychoanalysis movement. Timothy D. Wilson (of Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious) has pointed out that "an important part of the Freudian legacy was a rejection of the scientific method as a means of studying the mind." And, the "Secret Committee" was the powerful force behind the continuance of Freud's theory. A committee that was based on a bad seed: Narcissism.

From reading this book, one can certainly see Freud under a different light. I would recommend it.

I have been married to George for almost 15 years, and he has been my love, my support, and my best friend for even longer. We weren't blessed with any children, though I am incredibly close to my beautiful nieces and nephews, and my gorgeous great niece Maddison. I live in Edinburgh, Scotland and class myself as being Scottish though I was born in England. I have lived here most of my life now, so Edinburgh is most definitely home. I work in Finance and write, write and write some more in my free time. My dream is to one day be a full time author so I can do what I love most.

Awesome read, hard to put down. Recommend it to anyone with a love for the paranormal!

Words can't even describe how amazing this book is! The character detail is astonishing, makes it easy to imagine the character. You can never say "One more Chapter", the cliff hangers make you want to come back for more! I've laughed, I've cried and I fell in love with this book! Kudos on an amazing job J C! Can't wait to read more of your work!

I have loved this story from finding it prior to it being posted on the writers blog, she kept the readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen next. This story is the first book in a series, I am looking forward and waiting to see if the other stories in the series are published. I have read this story from front to back and am now reading it for the second time. J. C. Gordon is a wonderful writer.

Love this story. Been reading J C Gordon's work before it was being published. There isn't a story out their of Gordon's that I don't love. This is the best action packed, romance enhanced, complex story with the best twist to keep you guessing. And don't worry, it will end with you begging for more! As paranormal novels go, you could ask for better.

I already read it. Even better and more complete than I thought. This is a full overview about each and every instrument employed during the so-called 'Dark Ages'. What one sees is gaiety and merriment, besides learning about such nowadays unknown names as gemshorn, tromba marina, crwth, and others. To be perused over and over again.
