About the Author

Sylvia Plath (1932-63) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Smith College. In 1955 she went to Cambridge University on a Fulbright fellowship, where she met and later married Ted Hughes. She published one collection of poems in her lifetime, The Colossus (1960), and a novel, The Bell Jar (1963). Her Collected Poems, which contains her poetry written from 1956 until her death, was published in 1981 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Other posthumous publications include Ariel, her landmark publication, Crossing the Water, Winter Trees, Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams and The Journals of Sylvia Plath 1950-1962.

Engrossing.

After reading The Bell Jar I wanted to know everything I could possibly know about Sylvia Plath. I'd never read an author's journal or letters before, and I loved it! (It was one of my top ten reads of 2008.)

I love all the technology available to us today, but e-mail has certainly killed the magic of letters. This book has something like 1,000 letters from Sylvia, mostly to her mother. And yes, they are edited; and while at times you could certainly see Sylvia's mother making sure everybody knows she was a good mother, they are edited very well.

The letters read like narrative, taking you through a really interesting life story. Anyone interested in Plath should make this a must read. Between this and The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, I found Letters Home to be much faster paced and overall engrossing.

One day I may go back and read Letters Home and the journals simultaneously to see the differences in the letters vs. the journals during the same periods.

I highly recommend this book. Whether you are a fan of Plath's or just interested in the pre-techology life of a student, lover, wife, mother, you can't help but be captivated.

I love reading about Syliva Plath's life so if your a fan then this is definatley a book to add to your collection. It's a long read, not something you can just go through in a few days. This is a book you take your time with.

How do you write a book review when you are lost for words after reading the book? Well, I guess we will find out soon enough… ahem…

Freya North is one of my favourite authors, I would say she is definitely in my top two! I am up to date with all her books so the last two years I have waited patiently (honest) for her next novel to be released. I was not disappointed with “The Way Back Home” and once again with her latest release “The Turning Point.” I was left highly satisfied, so much so that I had to stare at the wall for a few seconds after reading the last page, just to take it all in.

How do I even begin to explain how this book made me feel? How do I put into words just the sheer joy of the way Freya writes? Within reading the first few pages, I couldn’t help but smile as the talent of her writing shone through the pages and made me think “yep, that’s why she’s my favourite” The detail that goes into her novels is just incredible, her descriptions of the places they are set in, (this story taking place in both Norfolk and Pemberton, British Columbia) jump off the page and you feel like you become richer with the knowledge of places you have never been before. This novel follows the lives of Frankie and Scott, but you don’t end up just knowing them, you end up knowing their whole family and you don’t just know them, you care about them. You want to know how Frankie’s children, Sam and Annabel, are and what they are up to, you want to know what movies Scott’s doing music for next or if Frankie is any closer to reaching her book deadline. Freya has a way of making you connect with every character you meet. This story stays with you and you feel like Scott and Frankie become a part of your life as you truly get a sense of who they are, how they live and what they mean to each other.

I’ve said this before but I feel I have to say it again, I don’t like giving you the whole story in my reviews, you can read what the book is about online and of course on the back or inside of the book. I don’t feel like I could do the book justice if I give you my brief version as we all most likely read things differently. All I can offer is my thoughts that this was such a refreshing book for me, it was a welcome change to what I have been reading lately and it was an absolutely wonderful welcome back Freya North to my bookshelf (In America I only have The Way Back Home and It was getting lonely! )

So, if you are looking for a beautifully written, emotional ride that will take your breath away, please pick up a copy and add Freya North to your must read author list! Now, I will sit here and wait for next year! :p

A love story that resonates...

Freya North's the Turning Point starts with a chance meeting--first on the Tube in London and then later in a hotel bar. That chance meeting leads to Frankie (a children's book author) and Scott (a Canadian musician) embarking on what starts as a one-night stand and evolves quickly into a long-distance relationship. It is, quite simply, two people finding the loves of their lives after initial missteps with other people.

As they struggle to deal with the logistics and the distance, the doubts and the initial reticence of family and friends, Frankie and Scott throw themselves into the business of loving each other...and their love is intense and rich and beautiful. So many wonderful moments depicted, so many times when their frustration at the distance is palpable. And having been through nearly three years of a long distance relationship when I was in the US and the love of my life was in Sweden, I could relate completely to Frankie's longing to be elsewhere, even when she knew that staying in Norfolk was best for her children.

Heart-wrenching, beautifully written and packing an emotional punch that will resonate...the Turning Point is the sort of novel that doesn't leave you. I finished reading it a week ago and I am still thinking about Frankie and Scott. A fantastic novel, Freya North. I can't wait to read your next offering.

Fantastic Read!

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I am a huge fan of Freya's work, but whether you've read every one of her novels or this is the first, this is an extraordinary read. Her characters are your best friends. Her story opens your imagination. I went down a road I didn't expect and I adored it. I thought I knew what it was about and that was great, but then when it was over, I realized it was about so much more. Somehow Freya takes the simple and makes it quite remarkable. I can't wait for her next one.

I felt I was right there with them!

It made me believe that yes, this is how the Quetzalcoatl legend was kept alive. I was going to write a paper about this novel for one of my classes, but lost the novel and did not have time to get another copy. So, it was great, three years later, to find a copy and finish reading it. Very satisfying.

Read Oriah's "The Invitation" (circa 2001) and just recently learned of this sequel... Maybe it came at just the right time in my life, or maybe "The Dance..." is actually even better than "The Invitation," hard to tell.

If you accepted Oriah's "invitation," it is time to dance.

It is difficult to imagine, but The Dance is even better than The Invitation. With her unique blend of beautiful language and down-to-earth wisdom, Oriah Mountain Dreamer takes us to the next logical, post-invitation step: action. "Don't just say 'yes' to my invitation," Oriah tells us, ". . . take my hand and dance with me." The Dance is about active spirituality, about putting our dance steps where our mouths are. And as with The Invitation, Oriah Mountain Dreamer leads us along this path by taking her turn at vulnerability first. She leads by example, and she is a beautiful, perfectly imperfect example of what humanity can be. The Dance offers fresh perspectives ("I believe that the big picture is somehow shaped by how we live the details, the little pictures that run through our lives."), and wise counsel ("If you need to be afraid, fear will come wherever you are, but you don't have to go out looking for it."), and it confronts the dangers of oversimplified, sugar-coated self-help recipes. ("Guaranteed outcomes and delineated steps may be warranted and useful for baking cookies and assembling bookshelves, but I find them less useful and potentially misleading when we are talking about finding meaning and creating happiness in our own lives and in the world.") As a psychotherapist, as an author, and as a human being, I have found a kindred, anti-namby-pamby spirit in Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Reading The Invitation is not a prerequisite for reading The Dance, but I can't think of a better way to spend your reading time than to read these two babies back to back. I said that it is difficult to imagine that The Dance is better than The Invitation, but you don't have to rely on imagination. Reading is believing.

Good for aspiring coaches

As someone aspiring to be an effective coach I found this book to be very helpful. Particularly with the neuro-linguistics aspects of coaching, i.e. body positioning, activities and all in relationship to coaching. As a story teller I also appreciated the didactic presentations being supplemented and "enfleshed" with narratives of actual coaching situations.
For coaches that wish to incorporate somatic awareness and the desire to be fully present with their clients this volume is a must read.
He offers wonderful exercises throughout the book, many of which I used, some, alas, I did not. But they are helpful for the learning experience they provide.

This is required reading for coaches

I have been a full time coach for twenty years. This book has delivered more value for me than any other book on coaching. Presence-Based Coaching is taking me to my next level of mastery as a coach, as a mentor for new, as well- as experienced coaches, and as a human being. I have already utilized some of the practices for myself , and I have applied some practices working with my individual clients and client groups. The practice on page #120 is especially powerful "Sensing the Qualities in the Field," for helping a client raise their self-awareness and stay more connected to themselves in challenging situations. I have facilitated it like a guided visualization. As an ICF Assessor, I recommend this book for any coach applying for their ACC, PCC or MCC exams.

Very thoughtful, reflective and provides useful excercises

For those who like the eastern approach to management, this book will be familiar. For those who are caught up in the busy-ness of management, this will provide an alternative approach and help you develop resilience for a changing environment and sustenance for the long haul. It is meant for coaching but i am not an executive coach but a manager who found it very useful.

Introduction

The irresistible appeal of a slow-cooker is its convenience and simplicity. Turn it on, and it cooks dinner while you do other things. You have no pot to watch. It doesnt burn or spill over. Just set it and let it do its work. Next thing you know, your kitchen smells heavenly, like a home-cooked meal, and you feel like your personal chef did all the work.

Slow-cookers first appeared in the 1970s, and you could get your crock pot in harvest gold, avocado green, or maybe decorated with orange flowers. Back then, the Crock-Pot (as the Rival Company, which is now a brand of Sunbeam Products, trademarked it) was mostly favored for cooking tough cuts of meat. The Crock-Pot left the limelight for a while, but in 2002, when I wrote my first slow-cooker cookbook (Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker, The Harvard Common Press), slow-cookers were enjoying a comeback. The goal of my first slow cooker book was to show how versatile slow-cookers are for vegetarian cooking and can be used to prepare everything from breakfast to dessert.

Fast forward ten years from that first book, and the popularity of slow-cookers shows no sign of waning. In addition, more people are enjoying a plant-based diet than ever before. Since that first slow-cooker cookbook was published, I've written many other titles, but I never stopped developing new recipes, discovering new techniques, and exploring new ideas for vegan slow-cooking. As I've explored new ways to use the slow-cooker for plant-based meals, I've been continually amazed at the effectiveness of slow cookers for vegan recipes. Over the years, I have developed scores of new recipes and explored the worlds cuisines to discover more creative ways to prepare food using the slow-cooker method. What I came up with was enough to fill another book.

I'm pleased and proud, therefore, to present this new book to you. It contains more than 200 recipes using only plant-based ingredients. I've also included pages of basic information and lots of new tips and pointers for making the most of your slow cooker experience. I've worked hard to make the recipes accessible using most sizes of slow-cookers. In addition to being 100 percent plant-based, many of the recipes are also gluten-free, soy-free, or low in fat.

We all know that a slow-cooker is ideal for cooking beans, soups, and stews, but as you explore the pages of Fresh From the Vegan Slow-Cooker, you'll discover a whole new slow-cooking world. The slow-cooker can be used to make braised vegetable dishes, comforting casseroles, luxurious risottos, and fun dips and snacks. It can even be used to bake potatoes, breads, pates, and desserts.

About the Author
Dawn Clifford, PhD, RD, is Associate Professor and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at California State University, Chico. In addition, she cofounded and is currently Director of FitU, a peer mentoring nutrition and exercise counseling program on campus. She received the Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award from Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors, a practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Clifford conducts research and is an accomplished speaker in the areas of MI and non-diet approaches to health and wellness. She has published several research articles in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior and written curricula for Today’s Dietitian and Nutrition Dimensions. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

Laura Curtis, MS, RD, is Director of Nutritional Services at Glenn Medical Center in Willows, California, where she provides clinical nutrition services to patients in acute care and is a nutrition therapist for the outpatient clinic. In addition, she serves as a preceptor to undergraduate dietetic students and a part-time lecturer at California State University, Chico. Ms. Curtis has extensive training in MI at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. As a nutrition therapist, she provides counseling to patients with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and disordered eating, and to those considering bariatric surgery. In her counseling, she pairs MI with the non-diet principles of intuitive eating and Health at Every Size.

I found this book enlightening. I wish this book had been a part of my program. It covers very useful concepts, is clearly written and contains helpful sample interactions. When I read sample client-practioner conversations, I found it interesting to cover up the practitioner's dialogue, formulate my own, and then compare my dialogue to the practitioner dialogue in the book. Recommended.

Motivational Interviewing for dietitians & beyond!

As a Registered Dietitian, I am always on the lookout for ways to learn to do my job better. By that I mean, ways to help my clients more effectively. I was turned onto Motivational Interviewing a number of years ago and have read a few books on the topic. The other books were helpful but I would get a bit frustrated with the examples they provided as they were often related to issues other than food and healthy lifestyle choices. This book, on the other hand, is all about helping clients with their eating and making healthy lifestyle changes. It is the best book I have read on the subject and I would say it is a "Must Read" for anyone who works with people to help them make healthy diet and lifestyle choices.
